Search engines such as google are making our society’s IQ go down faster every year. An everyday human being relies on google to help them find simple answers that most people should already know. Nicholas Carr makes various points on how google or other programs are making people stupid. Carrs essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid” shows us how search engines are in fact making us dumb. Google makes things easier to get to, “Research that once required days in the stacks or periodical rooms of libraries can now be done in minutes” (Carr) ,all someone has to do is type in what they need to know read about it then forget all about the topic. People use to go to a library and look up in an encyclopedia or another informational book to find out what they need. Someone would have to sometimes look through a whole book to find what they need. When someone using search engines like google it takes them right to what they need, so they do not need to obtain the …show more content…
information. With google people can just “zip along the surface like a guy on a jet ski,” (Carr) and not learn a single thing. Google is not just a search engine “Google is like command central for multiple resources at your fingertips.” (Carr). Google is also a source where someone could email someone which is also a way of making our communication skills worse. Instead of calling someone up or meeting them in person Gmail lets people send a quick message and be done with it all. Gmail makes our ability to communicate terrible which is similar to google making us unintelligent. The ability to communicate makes a human being smarter when it comes to getting a job you need to be smart and a good communicator. Google can be a useful tool in a person’s everyday life “A few Google searches, some quick clicks on hyperlinks, and I’ve got the telltale fact or pithy quote I was after.” (Carr).
Google makes it easier to find the information you need instead of looking for it for hours. Although google makes it easier to find the information a person needs, the person does not actually obtain the information. Carr makes a good point saying “My mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles.” (Carr) it shows a person can read something but not actually learn it. Google is a good resource, but because of it we do not actually learn the information we need. Carr makes various good points on how google is dulling our minds. Search engines take away a person’s ability to learn and make people stupid. The human’s brain does not take in the information like it used to before google. Therefore Carr is right google is “making us
stupid.”
