Step 4
Ruth Hooper a strong believer in women's rights wrote a quote that defines the new confidence a Flapper created. “A flapper is proud of her nerve-she is not even afraid of calling it by its right name. She is shameless, selfish but honest, but at the same time she considers these three attributes virtues. Why not? She takes a mans point of view as her mother never could, and when she loses she is not afraid to admit defeat, whether it be prime lover or $20 at an auction. (Flappers) Personal control wasn’t significant because women were not given the rights to express themselves as well as they can now. A main component of this occurred from being sexually repressed. Most often men would not allow their wives, daughters etc. express themselves freely because men were very dominant in almost everything that was important during this time period. Women would work day to day to meet their spouses needs to provide the most desirable life for him. They made women go against the norms because of the way they dressed, acted and presented themselves. The flappers created a determined mind set for these women to pursue and fight for what they believe. Without the flappers these accomplishments would not be as significant and successful as they are today. Society dramatically changed by this matter by the large quantities of women interested and involved in the government. Additionally, given the right to vote women empowered because they finally had a say for major political decisions. (Gender) For example, a woman's wardrobe was a very dramatic change compared to the old ways, which is similar to the way they went about voting. This is true because of women such as Susan B. Anthony who formed the national woman's suffrage association. As women became more involved in consumerism people noticed how great the New Women was evolving. With more free time and confidence women started eliminate the consumerism of the daily household products, and instead consumed products for
