Jake Portman is one of the round characters in the novel. The reason he is a round character is because we know who he admired. “Growing up, Grandpa Portman was the most fascinating person I knew.” (Pg. 8) Another way he is a round character is because we know where he is from and what it looks like.

In person, Jake appeared to be just one of the guys. Nothing fancy about himself, very humble and charismatic. After listening to Jake speak briefly about his life, family and his pursuit of his innate being, you can tell he’s sincere and dedicated to his craft and family. Jake was also instrumental in terms of being relative due to his Western New York origins. He can relate to Buffalonians and our struggle as a city in a financial crisis, where one side of the city’s future is in question while another side of the city’s future looks lucrative.…

A character in this story that was one of my favorites is Jake. Jake is also a young child, but has so true family to go home to everyday. He barely provided with enough clothes, food, and shelter to live his own everyday life. Jake is a self-reliant kid who finds himself stealing many things for his own good. In my opinion, for the situation Jake is in, and the reason for why he steals, I don’t see him as a bad kid for stealing. In my eyes, he is a bad…

This character is very unique because he changes his personality throughout the story. We all try to do well but we are all sinners and we need to learn from our mistakes. The American Dream: one of the most prevalent themes found in literary works of the Modern and Postmodern era. This phenomenon defines itself as the idea that any American is capable of achieving success, riches, and happiness through hard work alone. However, people who spend too much time and energy striving for wealth sacrifice their health and happiness, thus creating the American Nightmare. We all know someone, friend or relative, who works to the point of utter exhaustion in order to afford the big house and fancy cars. In fact, there is a piece of highly acclaimed literary work that illustrates this exact archetype: Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. The main character of the play, Willy Loman, represents that friend or relative we all know. He works his life away in an attempt to achieve the seemingly intangible American Dream, only to end his life living in the American Nightmare. As Willy becomes older, his formerly successful career begins to falter and his mental health begins diminishing due to years of mental and physical exhaustion catching up with him.…

Jake, narrates this story. Throughout the novel, Jake is sarcastic and cynical; this makes him an unlikeable character, so much so that the reader has doubts he can overcome the troubles in his life. However, this is a key element of his character. What Hemingway did in this novel was, and still is, ingenious. Another theme that the novel portrayed was the focus on the process, not the outcome. Suffering from PTSD, Jake needed to overcome his stressful situation. Since one of his interests was fishing, he went on fishing trips to experience it. Jake did not go to catch fish, he went in order to heal himself. Jake takes the readers on the fishing trip with…

The place and time of a story hold a great amount of weight on impacting a story, but without characters a story holds no true depth. The settings dictate the overall feelings a reader receives from the story, as for the characters they are depicted from the settings helping piece together the sentences deeper between the lines. Having multiple characters with diverse personalities and behaviors helps see the story from more than one angle. Collins masters this in The Moonstone by using characters with close relationships to the Verinder family, multiple narrators, and characters with suspicious backgrounds.…

The protagonist and narrator of the novel, Jake was left impotent from an injury incurred while serving with the Italian Front in World War 1. His inability to consummate his love for the insatiable Brett Ashley, and the sterile social backdrop of Paris provide a striking similarity to the Arthurian Fisher King motif of a man generatively impaired, and his kingdom thusly sterile. Bill Gorton, an amicable ally of Jake, and one of the few morally sound characters in the novel, serves as Galahad, gently kidding Jake about his injury, promoting self-acceptance and healing.…
