Is Lady Macbeth hateful?
Is lady Macbeth a hateful/fiendish character?

Introduction-
Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in 1606, during the Elizabethan/Jacobean times. He was writing for theatre during the reigns of 2 monarchs, Queen Elizabeth 1 and king James 1. Macbeth was written after the gun powder plot in 1605
The play Macbeth was set in Scotland. The play was performed in the Globe theatre London. The message conveyed in the play was-
Don't kill the king, don't believe in magic, never trust people who prophecise about fate, fate comes regardless of what you do.
In the Jacobean era, women were treated as chattel. They were not allowed to hold jobs, vote, act, open a bank account, or do anything that might allow them to shine. They were merely seen as a man's possession and their place was seen in the home, cooking, cleaning and looking after the children. They were dominated by their husbands and in return their husbands gave them protection.
They were seen as the 'gentler sex' the 'weaker sex', physically and mentally. They were also expected to be polite, obedient and mild mannered.
However referring to lady Macbeth, she is a stark contrast of what women were expected to be like in the Jacobean times. She dominates Macbeth through the play instead of Macbeth dominating her. This in the Jacobean times would've been absolutely shocking as it would have always been the man dominating the woman, so a woman dominating a man would've been unheard of. Throughout the play, Lady Macbeth becomes stronger and Macbeth becomes weaker.
I agree with the way Shakespeare tries to portray lady Macbeth as a hateful character. Throughout the play there are rarely any points where she can be portrayed as a nice person. For most of the play she is trying to manipulate people, especially Macbeth to get what she wants. She even asks evil spirits to unsex her and to remove her softer qualities so she can have the strength to murder Duncan. This in my opinion is a hateful act, that she would do so much

With them being considered the lesser of the two sexes and the ones who were supposed to keep house the men did not see a means for the women to be educated. Some also thought women were not able to retain the knowledge, this of course is not true but in this time period it was the way of thought. This most likely continued because the men believed they were the ones who had to bring home the money so they were the ones that needed education and women were to be educated in making a home and raising children and that was what they were good…

In the first place, women were not as free as men for many centuries. In fact, even today, in many cultures women are lower than men. “For example, in some Middle Eastern countries, women are forced to never show their hair or faces in public” (Rose). During the years of 1692 and 1693, society treated most women badly compared to men and likewise, men usually treated women as servants in this time period.…

They persauded Macbeth to kill people only because they wanted to be benefited. they were selfish and not worrying that they would soon turn Macbeth into a crazed lunatic The witches delighted in chaos and toil. They did not tell Macbeth what to do but they simply showed him what can happen through their prophecies and the apparitions they showed to Macbeth. Macbeth could've been a perfect target for them to bring about this chaos. Macbeth is a strong soldier, he has killed enemies in war, and perhaps the witches knew his true nature("by the prickling of my thumb, something wicked this way comes..."). The extent of their influenced is demonstrated through their predictions, they are temptations and a form of flattery which Macbeth eventually gave into. On one hand, Lady Macbeth has the far greater influence because she is Macbeth's wife and they share a passionate relationship together. Just like the witches she flatters him, but this time it is a direct flattery and a direct temptation towards him. As far as Macbeth being changed into a diffrent person, he himself is responsible for his own actions. The final decision lies within him and this was demonstrated when he carried out the murder of King Duncan. Lady Macbeth acts as the catalyst for Macbeth. Macbeth realised that he would have to commit regicide (stars, hide your fires; let light not see my deep and black desires), but he was unwilling to do so. Lady Macbeth changes his mind by attacking his manhood, despite the brave acts he has commited as a soldier. She also flatters him shamelessly. The murder of Duncan sets Macbeth on the trail of evil, as he didn't consult his wife when he killed Banquo and Macduff's family. He didn't even care when she commited suicide. The witches represent the Three Fates in Greek Mythology. they connotate destiny, fate, etc. They delight and thrive in chaos and toil. In my opinion, the witches represent the primeval human emotions of hate and wickedness. They are all that is…

Lady Macbeth completely destroys the idea that women are weak. At the time Macbeth was written, women were not seen as equal to men. They weren’t warriors, like many men were expected to be. One of the first times she speaks, Lady Macbeth reveals that she’s not delicate, and also has a dark personality. She doesn’t need to play by the rules.…

Lady Macbeth could be presented as a disturbed character quite early on in the book. In Act One, Scene 5 when she has received the letter from Macbeth she immediately starts to plan and take matters into her own hands. She knows immediately that the only way for her to achieve her goal of being queen is to kill Duncan. Lady Macbeth then says something quite witchy, she invites evil spirits to enter her. “Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here; and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty”. This comment shows that Lady Macbeth wants to dedicate herself entirely to her evil ambition. Lady Macbeth is willing and determined to steel herself and make herself into an evil, cold person. She knows that the murder will need evil power within her, which is not naturally in her. Lady Macbeth is ready to go to extreme lengths just to make sure her plan works and gets what she wants, and will get rid of anyone who is in her way.…

Lady Macbeth is a controversial figure. She is seen by some as a woman of strong will who is ambitious for herself and who is astute enough to recognise her husband’s strengths and weaknesses, and ruthless enough to exploit them. They see her in her commitment to evil and in her realisation that the acquisition of the Crown has not brought her the happiness she had expected, and finally, as one who breaks down under the strain. Others see her as a woman ambitious for her husband whom she loves. She recognises the essential good in him, and feels that, without her, he will never win the Crown. She allies herself with the powers of the occult for his sake, but here inherent femininity breaks down under the strain…

The female servants were sometimes bought and used as sex slaves. They bore children to wicked men who just sold them when they were young children. They had no say in anything, especially since they were women. They were despised by white men, only being used as their little tools. Many slaves were treated kindly and given the ability to live in a nice house with the master and his family. Those were rare; even they worried of some day being sold to another master who could be worse.…
