Motivation is a psychological feature that arouses an individual to act towards a desired goal. Obviously, motivating employees through the use of money as a material reward or motivator for work achievement is and has always been a matter of controversy. Nowadays, many employers feel that extra money motivates people to work extra. In my opinion, money is not always possible to motivate people as money is just a material satisfaction to employees. Hence, I strongly disagree that money is not an effective motivator at work.
The main reason I disagree is ‘money-dependence’ results in moral slavery. People always forget about sharing genuine values. The quest of money often provokes negative feelings of jealousy, greed and envy among personnel. It causes destruction of human qualities of friendship, mutual support, sympathy and care. This will lead to conflict in office. For example, when the distribution of money is unequal among the employees, they will feel unfair. Subsequently, jealousy and hatred will exist. This shows that money makes employees become greedy and they will never be contented. Therefore, money brings negative effect which will cause moral decay in human beings.
In addition, money is difficult to determine the standard of employees’ performance. Money only forces the employees to do the work but does not motivate in actual fact. If there is no extra money to award them, their working performance will drop. Psychologists have been finding that rewards can lower performance level, especially when the performance involves creativity (Kohn, n.d.). Most of the projects given by the employers require the creativity of employees. Yet, if the employees work for money, then their creativity will be limited. This is because they think that no matter what results they come out with, their employers will also pay them. Thus, money will not boost up the performance level of employees.
However, some may
