First of all Mr. Hyde is a religion teacher at Culver Creek. He is an old man, who is pysically week. In the text he is called as an elderly teacher. This can be proved with, what Miles Halter says when he sees Mr. Hyde the first time (“Barrel-chested and ancient, the old man, it seemed to me, might die beforehe ever reached the podium“; p.35, ll. 4-6). However the narrator calls him ’a genius’(p.44, l. 19). To verify his opinion we can guess that he means that the teacher has much experience and he is pretty ambitious. The narrator’s opinion arises after the second lesson. Mr. Hyde has clear rules and if any pupil do not respect the rules, he will be asked to leave the class(p.36, ll.12/13 and p. 44, ll. 6/7). This feature brings up his next character traits: he is self confident and strict. The latter mentioned sentence, is an example of his main character traits. In my view these traits are useful for a teacher.
In opposite to his strictness he may be a kind teacher. If you are following his rules and are interested in learning something, he supports you.
In contrast to this view, we can similarly say he is a bad teacher. To follow this opinion Alaska conveys to the reader the impression that he is not fair and unyielding. This feature is revealed when she says he is an ’asshole’(p.44, l.18). To explain, why she said this: Miles and her were kicked out of class, because he was looking out of the window and she defended him (p.44 l.10 – p.45 l.13). But this examle underlines similarly that if you follow his rules you will not get those problems.
To conclude it, in my mind Mr. Hyde is a good teacher.
