Is Odysseus An Epic Hero?
An epic hero is someone who embodies the ideals of a society. He overcomes obstacles, and is courageous, intelligent, and honorable. He is on an epic journey. The Odyssey is usually described as an epic poem of an epic hero. The following text is about whether or not Odysseus really is an epic hero.

Sometimes, Odysseus really acts like a hero, but sometimes not. In the Trojan War, he was very strong and brave, and he protected his men, but in book 9-12, he doesn’t seem to be the leader of his crew because they decide against his warning more than once. In book 11, he gets scared of the spirits of the dead and runs away.

Furthermore, in my opinion it is never right to kill people, not even in a war. So, though it was to save his crew, it is not honorable to kill people.

In book 9, several men were devoured by the Cyclops in front of his eyes simply because of Odysseus’ pride.

He is not a good role model because he is not faithful to his wife. In book 10, he cheated on her with Circe to make her release his men. He also cheated on her with Calypso.
He seems to be selfish, for example in book 12, when he tells his crew about what Circe told him about the sirens. He tells them: “I alone was to hear their voices, so she said, but you must bind me with tight chafing ropes so I cannot move a muscle, bound to spot…”(276 Homer), but she actually told him: “Soften some beeswax and stop your shipmates’ ears so none can hear, none of the crew, but if you are bent on hearing, have them ties you hand and foot in the swift ship, erect at the mast block, lashed by ropes to the mast so you can hear the Siren’s song to your heart’s content” (273 Homer).

On the other hand, he is clever, and he is helped by the gods. That makes him different from normal people. Athena really likes him and is his mentor. She is convinced that he is a hero. Also, the author, Homer, who is a god, too, seems to think of Odysseus as a hero.

He also seems to be kind of famous because many

His actions as a military leader are ones that are attractive, as a husband, he did not handle himself in a Christlike manner and as a father his behavior was one that could be looked up to. When he is portrayed as a military leader, he treats his men fairly and cares about the lives of each of them. However, as a husband, Odysseus is unfaithful, but when he plays the roles of a father, he is only concerned with the reunion of his family. Unfortunately, Odysseus does not always handle himself with the perspective of a Christian worldview, especially when it counts. While Odysseus does not follow in the footsteps of a Christian in some of the roles he plays, there are some aspects of his leadership and fatherly involvement that would be considered…

Odysseus is an epic hero because of all the challenging obstacles he had to overcome. He is strong and brave by never giving up, but rather determined to fulfill his accomplishments as a young and adventurous man. Odysseus was also very cunning, knowing how to create and form the ideal way to sabotage the Trojans. Such a bold hero and great father that seeks to win the 10 year war with the Trojans and succeeds. Although, weaknesses lye in every man as a human necessity and even this 'Hero' has one.…

A hero would not be thought of today as thinking of people as less than them. This shows the hubris of Odysseus, another detrimental feature of the King of Ithaca. His ego and pride are a huge flaw in his character which often can also lead to the death of his friends. On the island of the cyclops he would not leave the cave of Polyphemus even though it looked dangerous until he “saw him, saw what gifts he’d give” (Book 9, line 260) and even though it appropriate to arrogantly “set our hands on the cheeses” and “eat the bulk ourselves and [settle] down inside” (Book 9, line 260). This excessive entitlement leads to many of Odysseus’ men being slaughtered by the giant when even a soldier of Odysseus’ had suggested they take the food and leave rather than risking being killed, which Odysseus ignores. Another flaw of Odysseus is his infidelity to Penelope. While she waits loyally for Odysseus to come back he sleeps around with both Circe and Calypso. He makes it sound like he was forced to sleep with Calypso “since the nymph no longer pleased” (Book 5, line 170) but it is in fact shown that he at some time wanted to based on…

To start, Odysseus was developed with standard Greek heroic traits. First, Odysseus was courageous in the face of opposition, as shown by his encounter with Charybdis and Scylla. The protagonist of The Odyssey commanded his crew to row onwards in the face of the monsters, showing his courage. He was also intelligent, as he devised a plan to escape the wrath of Polyphemus. Odysseus made the Cyclops drunk with his liquor before blinding him and allowing his crew to escape on the underside of the sheep of the island. Finally, the main hero of the story was perseverant, as illustrated when he left Ogygia, battled Poseidon’s storms, and made it to King Alcinous’s island.…

I believe Odysseus to be a hero, because all his flaws are what make him human. He is not a god, so he will make mistakes. His intelligence saves him and his men’s lives, and he does not give up. He was a great leader and was willing to pay a price for knowledge. He recognized that knowledge really is power, and decides to learn everything he can on his journey home. He also acknowledges that sometimes lying, cheating, and stealing might sometimes be necessary. That is what makes him human. “He achieves both kleos and nostos in the end and doesn’t have to die for either”…

What is an epic hero? Homers’ “Odyssey” is about an epic hero named Odysseus and his quest home. “The Odyssey” begins after the Trojan war had left Odysseus trapped, pointlessly seafaring for 10 years after angering Poseidon, the god of the sea. He tries desperately to return home to Ithaka and his wife, Penelope, and newborn son, Telemachus. Odysseus then has many hardships upon which he overcomes through his intelligence and wit. Odysseus is an epic hero because he is intelligent, he listens to the god’s advice, and he is witty; able to think on his feet. With the help of the gods he can survive things most men couldn’t.…

Odysseus is not a modern day hero because he tricked his men into thinking that he has logos. He convinced his men to be as brave as he is when they were going to fight through scylla. He does this because he knew he whould not get eaten while his men whould. as shown in this quote he gives his men ethos to get them ready “Well, I walked up and down from bow to stern, trying to put heart into them, standing over every oarsmen, saying gently, have we ever been in danger before this.” after he told them this they went to scylla and fought. Odysseus also has bravery when he stabbed the cyclops in his eye, he told him that his name is nobody to trick him. he also disguised his men as sheep so that they could get out of the cave. But one reason that is…
