When you look at the many fairy tales that the ancient civilizations invented, how could they randomly come up with something like that without inspiration? As Matthew was hanged, he probably put a curse on any one in the family of Pyncheon who behaved like their ancestor, and they would face certain punishment. As you look at Hepzibah and Clifford you realize that they are not greedy or selfish, thus saving them from the curse. Judge Pyncheon behaved like his ancestor, however, and faced certain death the exact way the Colonel did.
