Stem Cell Research Stem Cell testing and research covers many different areas today. These cells are the basic center of where cells of any tissue in the body grow. Stem cells have the ability to grow into many different types of tissue that is why they are so unique. Stem Cells can be grown to replace almost any tissue that has been damaged or destroyed by disease. With so many diseases today that are said to be untreatable or have no cure, stem cells may just hold the answer. One-day researchers can answer the following questions. “How stem cells change into different types of tissues, how to safely implant them into the human body with minimal side effects, and …show more content…
Some people believe Obama removed politics from science by lifting the restrictions. While others fell, he has set back protection for innocent life. Most religious groups have taken some type of position on embryonic stem cell research.
Catholic’s opposes harvesting of stem cells from embryonic tissue, because it views it as taking an innocent human life. Although, it does not oppose the adult or umbilical cord blood stems cell research. Hindu/Buddhist has taken the stand that “personhood begins at conception” (Freedman, 2008). The Jewish fill that as long as the research is within the federal guidelines it is fine. Muslim believe that embryo’s gain their soul between 40-120 days, so if the research is done on embryo’s less than 40 days old there is no conflict. Episcopalian, Methodist, and Unitarian Universalist all agree that the use of IVF embryos is fine for stem cell research. Lutheran opposes embryonic stem cell research of any kind. Southern Baptists are against use-aborted embryo’s tissue for research. Presbyterian supports stem cell research and agrees embryos and embryonic tissue research is …show more content…
While others believe that until an embryo becomes a fetus it is not alive. Some feel that if an embryo has been aborted then it is fine to use it for stem cell research. “Potential donors should not be asked to provide the embryo for research purposes until they have independently decided that discarding the embryo is their preferred option; that is, the donors should have decided that the embryo will not be adopted or permanently stored before they consider donating the embryo for research. Once this limitation on the timing of the decision to donate an embryo for research is incorporated, the three above-mentioned scenarios for dealing with embryos remain, while each of these scenarios demonstrates respect for the embryo as a symbol of life in a different way” (Grant and Strathdee, 2010). Hypocrisy is widespread with stem cell research in healthcare. Doctors have been using adult stem cells to treat people for years with bone marrow. Umbilical cord blood has been used to treat different types of genetic defects and diseases successfully. For people in healthcare and out that do not completely understood the basics of stem cell research there will always be unanswered
