Prior to Implementation
Prior to implementation we’ll need to see what kind of network the campus would need. The requirements of the campus call for an infrastructure network, as ad-hoc is merely computer to computer, but the requirements call for wireless access to the campuses internal network and provide access to the internet. Next to that we’ll need to identify what speed/capabilities the network will need to provide. Seeing how the campus has thousands of students as well as the admin and faculty, there is probably a need for strong wireless capabilities and so I recommend a 802.11g. You also need to identify security issues and ensure they’re implemented before putting the network online; this is to ensure there is no weakness in the network from the start.
Who will utilize the WLAN resources
Outside of the computer labs and other locations with wired devices; this relegates the students would be utilizing the WLAN the most as most (if not all) of the admin/faculty have designated terminals. This covers students with mobile devices in classrooms with no computers or wired access, as well as students in the common areas, and/or their dorm.
What applications do users and administration intend to use
The admin/faculty will no doubt be utilizing email, gradebook, and any other classroom designated software. However, as these are classroom/office specific, these devices may be wired and not need to access the WLAN; of course there are times when the wired service may be down and so they may need to access the WLAN.
The students will also be accessing their email as well as classroom specific software; but they are students and since we can’t lockdown their mobile devices we have to assume they will be accessing a lot more, even during classroom hours. This would be YouTube, Facebook, various media streaming services and a lot more that can take up much bandwidth.
