Dead or Alive II Pre-Lab

1.In order to find the article, I first went to Google Scholar and set my search parameters for articles published from 2010-2013. I then decided to use the keywords “deep sea trench life” to pull up a broad spectrum of articles pertaining to the types of life we would be discovering in our samples. I then browsed each article’s title to determine if it contained relevant information to the topic at hand.

2.After finding a suitable article, I then went through the parameters of the CRAAP test-

Current- The article was published on April 25, 2011 so it met the criteria of being published after 2010
Relevant- The article describes the salt content of the water around the areas of the vents. This is relevant because it gives insight into what kind of conditions the living species might flourish. In lab, we can apply this by attempting to recreate the conditions so that the species might grow more effectively.
Authority- It is authored by multiple biologists from various institutions and was published in a textbook on microbiological ecology
Accuracy- The information comes from a study that was started in 2008. It also lists multiple references along with a link to the original study itself.
Purpose- There was no obvious purpose to the article other than to inform the audience about the subject at hand. The project was funded by an EU organization.

3.I found information pertaining to the salt content of the water around deep sea vents which are representative of the types of vents from which the samples were taken. This would be of value to researchers trying to get the contract because it would clue them into what type of organisms would be present in the samples they are analyzing.

The Deep Sea World hypothesis, is many simple metabolic reactions emerging near ancient seafloor hot springs, could be a possibility to the beginning of life.
