In this essay, I will be writing about how Grace Nichols uses imagery symbolism and poetic techniques to express the contrast between the relaxing atmosphere at an isolated island in the Caribbean and crowded energetic atmosphere at the urban areas called London. I will be deeply analyze the techniques used in the poem and how they affect the reader’s attention.

The poem is based on “Island man” who wakes up to the sound of his home at the island and he now lives at London. He dreams about his home at Caribbean listening to the familiar sound of the waves. The alliteration,”sun surfacing” creates sounds create rhythm and mood and can have particular connotations. This is also personifications which will give the even bigger impression on readers. It also has the effect on showing the actual power of the nature figuratively. The vibrant color “Blue surf”, “emerald island” exemplifies the beautiful landscape of the island he is dreaming to. There are two repetitions used in the poem “ groggily groggily” and “ muffling muffling” and this is type of an onomatopoeia for describing what’s going on and it could also mean how sucks the reality is.
It is very obvious that he doesn’t want to get out of his bed and just continue thinking about the caribbean from the quotation “ island man heaves himself”. Overall the tone of this poem is sort of happy but sad at the same time. It’s happy because he is dreaming about hi wonderful life back in the Caribbean. It’s sad because he think thinks he is at Caribbean, however he is still at busy London. The metaphor, ‘his crumpled pillow waves’ this is metaphor that pillow actually doesn’t create wave but maybe it does in his sweet dream. There was also some smooth rhythm in the poem using
