Watts introduces a whole new perspective it gave the islanders knowledge and understanding of another's view on life in a whole other place. The author effectively uses a young girl to relate her situation to a book by Charles dickens even though they are from different worlds they understand each other’s struggle of acceptance and betrayal. This event actually occurred in real life in New Guinea and when she felt isolated the most and wasn't able to trust her mother Dolores because she stole the book the white man was teaching the class about. Feeling isolated and unloved she asks her teacher “Is it weird I can hear pip's voice, like really hear him” (jones 181). Matilda`s able to remove herself from isolation by opening herself up to Dickens book and the protagonist in that book. This form of literature must have been a strong influence to her because she was able to visualize herself with the protagonist of the other book as if they've met in person. Literature uses strategies like visualization to expose readers to another’s realities. Ryan and Alex spoke about how literature is able to change a person's beliefs and values. I agree with their point about literature and even go as far as saying all stories will change anyone's view on something. I was taught that all stories have a moral to learn from in which people believe in. Matilda taught me about how life in a warzone cut off from literature and the media can make someone feel so alone but with literature she's able to connect with another person even if that person was fictional. I learnt that literature is taken for granted; that all this communication through literature has created ways for us to gain knowledge but we have not been utilizing this as much as we could.
