Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: A Solution?
The conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians is one that has been going on for thousands of years. In recent years it has become a global issue because of the two countries’ inability to cooperate with each other without the use of violent actions. With the help of the international community, two solutions to this conflict have been proposed: the one state solution and the two state solution. The two state solution is favored, and it involves Israel remaining a state with its pre-1967 borders and Palestine becoming a state once again, with land in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and Eastern Jerusalem. This solution, however, is problematic because Israel has settlements in what would become Palestine that it refuses to remove citizens from and Palestinians continue to bomb Israel as a “solution” to the problem. The one state solution, while less favored by both Israel and Palestine, involves a much simpler solution of creating one democratic state where both Israelis and Palestinians can live together in peace. This solution is also problematic because it requires Israelis and Palestinians to put aside their differences and work together, which is highly unlikely. Both the one state and two state solutions incorporate fantastic ideas, but they each have problems that Israelis and Palestinians need to work past in order to work together and live in peace. The Israeli Palestinian Conflict has been going on for thousands of years, before either Israel or Palestine were states. The land was once Judea, where the Jewish people lived, until it was conquered by the Romans. The Romans renamed the land Palestine, and it was shortly taken over by Arabs who then lived there for thousands of years (www.mideastweb.org). After their land was conquered, most of the Jewish people relocated, but always with the hope that they would
