Abortion means the induced termination of a pregnancy resulting in the death of the embryo or foetus. An operation is carried out by doctors to abort the foetus, thus terminating the pregnancy. Abortion is legal in some countries, while in other countries it is not.
The aspect of the issue analysis which will be found in this report is abortion should be banned. Some countries have laws that allow abortion if the foetus will experience disabilities, either physical or mental, after birth. Some ethicists disagree with this as this as a reason for abortion is offensive to physically and mentally disabled people because it implies that their lives and less worthy compared to the lives of ‘normal’ people. UK’s 1967 Abortion Act allows abortion to be carried out if there is a significant risk that the foetus will be born disabled. The Disability Rights Commission criticised this, saying that it doesn’t value …show more content…
disability and non-disability equally.
Many who support women’s rights are trying to promote practical solutions to the reasons that cause women to choose abortion.
They argue that abortion does not free women, but allows the society not to provide for women’s needs. It provides a way of side-stepping other real issues that should be addressed and solved. Inexpensive and readily available childcare should be provided, instead of allowing them to abort their children. There are women who are allowed abortion because they are raped, starving and in abusive relationships. The issues should be solved, and just allowing abortion does not do it. If these problems are solved, there will be no need for
abortion.
Another reason abortion should be banned is because it can damage the long-term physical and mental health of the mother. Inflammation may occur to the mother, and some bad cases of it resulting in deaths. Abortion also increases the rates of breast cancer and maternal suicide. Some women who have undergone abortion will experience mental trauma due to the loss of their child.
The issue was presented in numerous ways in the range of texts studied. The articles provided with information about the reasons why abortion should be banned. Something that I found interesting is that some mothers abort their own children for their careers! Isn’t it bad enough to sacrifice a life for a career, let alone your own child?
Through analysing and discussing texts, I gained an understanding of different perspectives, together with an awareness of social, legal and moral issues associated with this topic. In my view, abortion should be banned as it is a crime to kill your own child and also due to the reasons above.
