Italian Immigration Narrative
Some time ago I was seven years old and I wanted to go to Italy. I had always heard stories from my parents and grandparents about their trips to Italy and how much fun they were and all the things they did while they were there. I wanted to go and see what a different country had looked like and all the family members I had never seen or talked to before. I arrived home from school one day and my mom was anxious to tell me something, but she waited for my sister to get home before she did. My sister Christina at the time was twelve years old and she too had not been to Italy. When she came home my mom brought both of us together and said, “We are going to Italy in the summer!” I was so excited I lept into the air screaming, “Yes! For how …show more content…
It was only the month of May so we still had some time left in school. Christina made a count down to Italy on a calendar in her room. Everyday I was anxious to leave and go there but I had to wait. As school was coming to close the 2006 world cup was starting and this was the year that I started to play soccer so I was very excited to watch the tournament. We were leaving from New York on June 29th, our flight left at 10:30 am. That morning my mom, sister, and I all said goodbye to my dad before we left. My grandparents, Nonna and Papa, live in Brooklyn so we set off to there My mom wanted to drop the car off at their house so we would not have to leave it at the airport. As waited for the car service to pick us up and take us to the airport, while we waited everyone else was watching the morning news and I was going through my carry on. I was making sure I had all my toys and snacks for the long flight ahead. When car service finally arrived after what seemed like hours we piled all of our luggage into the back of the car and made our way to the airport. When we arrived at the airport we took all of the bags out of the back of the car and went to go check in. Checking in took forever even though there were not that many people in line, I started to …show more content…
Wait for us” mom insisted.
“I want to get on the plane” I pleaded.
“We will. You’re going to be on it for six hours” responded Papa. All of us got on the plane, put our carry ons in the overhead compartments and took our seats.
After being in the air for about an hour my mom leaned over to me and told me “I know you don’t speak Italian so if you need just let me know and I’ll help translate for you.”
“Alright but I think I can try to figure it out” I replied. The rest of the flight was long and monotonous, and I could not fall asleep because I was too excited. We arrived in Milan after a six hour flight and right from that flight we had to board another smaller plane to go to the airport near my Grandparents home town. This flight only took two hours but it was still terrible. We arrived at the second airport and we had my uncle waiting for us with his tiny car. We stuffed all of our luggage into the car and we made our way to Acri. While we were in the car he was speaking to my mom and grandparents and I could not understand anything he said, it was like trying to put a puzzle together without any of the pieces. We had made it, I was ready to start my vacation but I was hungry and jet lagged. So we went out for some pizza and gelato and we went back and

Back in the summer of 2013 my family was deciding on what vacation we should go on. It took us until July to finally decide where we wanted to go and we chose San Diego. At the time I didn’t know where San Diego was and frankly I thought we were going to Florida. When we got in the car and started to drive I was very confused on the fact we were not going to an airport. On the eight hour car ride there it took my family around an hour and a half to explain that we were not going to Florida.…

Many people have emigrated from Italy to America over the past few centuries. During the time period of 1880-1920, the largest number of Italians arrived in America as nearly four million Italian immigrants came to the states. Most came from either Sicily or southern Italy and were mostly comprised of lower income people. A majority of the immigrants were known as the "birds of passage". Life was often hard for Italians in America as they were forced into slums and the process of gaining citizenship was difficult. They faced difficult tests, both physically and mentally and many were sent back to Italy for failing. Americans looked down on Italians and they were stereotyped as violent people due to the number of gangs affiliated with the Italian culture. Al Capone was just one of many famous gangsters who reinforced this way of thinking. The Italians brought their heritage and traditions with them, helping to make the United States a cultural melting pot.…

When one hears about Italy some significant characteristics come to mind. A reasonable answer of course depends on experience, understanding, and knowledge of the country. Many sophisticated people think about the culture or the fashion but unfortunately far too many Americans instead think about stereotypical Italian-Americans such as, Guido’s or the mafia, to represent their depiction. In modern society the media plays a huge role in the way we perceive the world. Due to negative portrayal of Italian-Americans by the media and reality television, Americans are quick to apply inaccurate stereotypes to all Italians. From the unification of the city states to the immigration to the New World, Italians had always had a strong sense of nationality toward their country and heritage. Whether they live in Rome or live in Brooklyn, Italians and Italian-Americans always seem to praise their culture. So then who are Italians? Are they the characters that we see in the media or is there something more behind the fist pumps and the leather jackets?…

In the world we live in today, many centuries ago a huge movement started to erupt in the United States, which caused a sustainable increase in population through out time and still continues on this very day. That big movement was the immigration to the United States of America. In case anyone did not know the exact definition of immigration, it is the movement of a big group amount of people into another country or area to which they are not imprinted or inherited originally to. Out of all the millions of people who immigrated to the United States the majority of the newcomers came from specifically north and Western Europe.…

It was two in the morning. I got out of bed, running on three hours of sleep. I ran downstairs after getting ready for a long bus ride. I saw my mom and grandpa waiting downstairs, as my grandpa was going on the trip with me. When at the school, teachers checked our bags, kind of like the airport. After this check, we were off (well, about an hour later). Now it was off on our new home for the next 12 hours. For the first three hours, everyone slept. It was boring and I will skip that. We then pulled over for our breakfast stop. When we stopped, the teachers passed out our boxes of bagels. We proceeded to get back on the road next, which was a rather long time. About four hours of driving through Ohio farms and Pennsylvania hills,…

The ethnic group that I most closely identify with is Italian. The Italians started to immigrate to the United States in 1880. They immigrated to many different areas based on what part of Italy they came from. For example the Sicilians settled in New Orleans while the Neapolitans and Calabrians settled in Minnesota. Italians tended to form enclaves where they settled to feel safer and still be able to practice their traditions. Italians during that time were overwhelmingly catholic and in the United States there were not a lot of places for them to practice their religion. There were some catholic churches but those were run by the Irish and were a different…

It had been a crazy morning as I ran all over my house trying to find my jacket and boots. My mom had been admitted into the hospital that morning for a massive headache and all I could think about was whether or not she would be okay. I took her to the emergency room that day before so going to class was the last thing on my mind. My father and sister had agreed to stay with her till I ended class so I was more at ease knowing she wouldn’t be alone. After running all over my house looking for my things I quickly gathered myself to make my train. I finally got to Penn Station with four minutes to spare. I quickly walked to where the rest of my class was as we waited for instructions to where we would…

The ethnic group that I belong too is the white American ethnic group. To be more specific, my background is mainly Italian so people may consider me Italian-American. Most of the Italians immigrated to the United States in small percentages. Most of the immigration occurred in the 20th century during the years of 1880-1960. Many of the Italian immigrants came from southern Italy with very low education. The main reason for Italian immigration was because of the poor economic conditions in Italy during the 20th century. The Italians settled in specific areas where they can all interact with each other and be away from other ethnic groups. Since they were not educated they mainly performed manual labor. The Italian immigrants were subjected to severe anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant discrimination and even violence such as lynching. A small amount of the immigrants only wanted to come to America to earn money, and then go back to Italy.…

I was about the age of 10 when I finally learned my heritage. My mother and I were standing in the bank vault, and she was getting some papers for a trip to Canada, to update all of our passports. I was there with her, and while she was going through the things in our lock box, one particular, colorful document caught my eye. I pulled it out and held it up to her, asking what it was. She told me it was my birth certificate. I looked at it once again and replied that this couldn’t be my birth certificate, because it was written in a strange language, not English. She finished getting all of the documents, including my birth certificate and we went home. I couldn’t stop asking her questions about what it was, until she finally told me. That day, I learned I was adopted. The adoption story itself changed how I…
