The Italian Renaissance began in the Middle ages in the great city's and state's of Italy. Italian merchants and political officials supported and appointed the great artists of the day, because of this the products of the Renaissance grew up inside their own walls. The most powerful city’s and state's were Florence, The Papal States, Venice, and Milan.
Each of these states grew up with its own distinctive character,mostly caused by the differences between their government that presided over each.
Florence. the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance,grew powerful as a wool trading post began, and remained powerful throughout the Renaissance because of the leadership of the Medici family,who maintained the city's financial strength and were intelligent,generous patrons of the arts. European historians success tend to place Europe's major break with its medieval and classical past with the discovery of America and the Reformation.
