ES 204: DYNAMICS

SYLLABUS

Office Hours: M-W-F 1:00 - 2:00 PM Tu-Th 8:00 - 10:15 AM Goals: The purpose of the course is to present the foundations and applications of the relationship between forces acting on an object and its motion. This knowledge is essential for the detail study of further courses such as fluid dynamics, flight dynamics and structural dynamics. The course is also designed to emphasize the critical importance of good problem solving skills.

Performance Objectives:

1.- Use vector notation to calculate the velocity and acceleration of a particle or rigid body in motion.
2.- Use the second law of motion to calculate acceleration and obtain information about the forces acting on the object.
3.- Use energy methods such as concepts of work, kinetic and potential energy in solving problems involving forces depending on the object’s position.
4.- Use momentum methods to determine the change in object’s velocity. Analyze impacts and forces exerted by continuous flow of mass.
5.- Analyze planar motions of rigid bodies without considering the forces and couples causing them.
6.- Introduction to vibrations (If time permits)
