Jack Schaefer's Shane
In Jack Schaefer's Shane, Shane, a man with an unknown past, rides into a small town where he meets the Starett family. Soon after he arrives, Joe Starett asks him to stay to help with the farm, to which he gladly agrees. Although the whole family quickly adjusts to Shane's presence, matters are complicated by Fletcher, the most powerful cattle rancher in town, who will seemingly stop at nothing to acquire all of the farmer's land. He is particularly keen on the Staretts' land, and his requests become even more urgent upon Shane's arrival. As the story progresses, Shane is confronted by Fletcher's men and is, eventually, forced to fight. The climax, which will ultimately determine the fate of not only the Staretts but all of the farmers, comes
when Shane confronts Stark Wilson, a deadly gunman. Throughout the story, Shane is consistently loyal, alert, and mysterious.
