Jack’s Change of Heart

The novel All the Kings Men takes place in the South during the 1900’s and is

narrated by Jack Burden. Jack has a tendency to hide from the present in the past. The

line “Perhaps that was the curse of Jack Burden: he was invulnerable” shows that he must

change his ideas and thoughts before he can accept and love himself and others.

Throughout the novel Jack Burden discovers his change of heart, through the Great

Twitch Theory, the death of Judge Irwin and the Great Sleep.

In the novel Jack develops his Great Twitch Theory. The theory states that

everything everyone does is controlled by a random input, and nobody takes

responsibility for consequences of their actions. This theory is a coping mechanism

    Warren's style of writing can be characterized as remarkable and extravagant but simplistic at the same time. All The King's Men is written in a flashback and Warren's style and ideas are narrated through character Jack Burden.
