Factory farming in the Chicken Industry
As a human do you take your freedom for granted, the ability to move about whenever you want and live your life the way you want to? The answer to that question is yes for most Americans in today’s society. Well imagine being born into filthy, compact cages or packed into barns overflowing with tens of thousands of chickens, unable to move around and choking from the overpowering smell of manure in the air. And better yet living in these conditions minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, and week by week only to be hideously slaughtered without having one single happy moment in your life. Sadly this is the story for the 18 billion factory farmed chickens each year. Some people say factory farming is a great thing while others completely disagree. What do you think? Factory farming involves the exploitation of animals so it ensures profits. But is the torture of these animals worth the profit? Factory farming requires lots of labor to abuse these animals, so farms provide employment to local communities. Surely having no heart is a job requirement. Because the use of technology and chemical products in factory farms, food is produced at lower costs, which means lower prices for the consumer. Consumers shouldn’t delight at the lower prices because the food they feed their families is most likely contaminated. A 2006 study by Consumer Reports found that a staggering 83 percent of grocery market chicken it tested was infected with either campylobacter or salmonella bacteria or both.
