In this case Jamal and Forrester bring out the very best in each other. After years of being cooped up in an apartment, Jamal finally got Forrester to leave. This is a major turning point in their friendship because they are gaining more and more of each others trust. According to Rob Brown, ¨Forrester brings out Jamals intelligence and Jamal brings Forrester back into life. They need each other in a way they never imagined.¨ Essentially, Forrester and Jamal need one another to bring out their true identity. This is important because Jamal and Forrester are a lot alike when it comes down to the topic of writing and reading. They use past experiences to help each other through all the challenges thrown at them. The significance of this is that sometimes one needs someone else to help find their true identity. Being in Crawfords classroom was a step up from what Jamal was used to in the Bronx. That did not stop him from throwing challenges at Crawford, and Crawford had no problem throwing them back. At his old school, Jamal was lazy in the classroom and never tried to take on any challenges. Now that he has met Forrester, he is ready to take on any challenge given to him. For example, ¨Jamal encounters not only his first fan, but a mentor who will challenge and change him forever, and Forrester has his first reason in years to emerge from his self-imposed solitude.¨ In essence, Jamal grew up in the Bronx and visited the cities basketball court almost everyday. At the basketball court his friend Fly and some others joined him. Jamal hides his intelligence from his friends because he is worried they will think of him different. A change in Jamal's surroundings did him good. He started to show up to Forresters apartment a little more and the basketball court a little less. His academic abilities soon started to shine through his writing once he became more comfortable with his new surroundings. This shows that sometimes change is good. In Jamal's and Forresters case it is good. Throughout their friendship they threw many challenges at each other that made them into a better person, also bringing out their true identity.
