James Baldwin's Androclus And The Lion

James Baldwin’s retold fable of “Androclus and the Lion” explores the value of all kinds of friendship. Androclus, a slave, ran away from his cruel master. He was going through a forest, dying, when he went into a cave and found an injured lion. He helped the lion by removing a thorn in the lion’s foot, and in return, the lion helped Androclus by bringing him food to the cave. He then became friends with the lion. Androclus was then found by some soldiers of Rome and was brought back to Rome to face his punishment. The penalty for a slave who ran away from his/her master was to fight a lion without any help.
