The Scorch Trials were the last daunting tasks for the young Gladers. The Scorch contained Cranks and everything else that could possibly kill somebody. Including a veracious neurological virus called the Flare. This disease afflicts many in a very short period of time and acts in stages. The first stage is comprised of short-term memory loss and mild confusion. Furthermore, the dominant features of this nasty affliction materialize in stage two. Hysteria and insomnia quickly accompany the already evident confusion and memory loss. The final stage arrives with uncanny signs of rampant convulsions paired with explicit outbursts of aggression. Alternatively, the Flare affects everyone differently and progression varies from person to person. In the novel, Newt is infected with the Flare. Fortunately, his symptoms don’t show until far later in the book: “Newt stood up in a blur of speed and punched the wall behind his chair. ‘First of all, it doesn’t matter if I have the thing in my brain—I’m gonna be past the buggin’ Gone before too long anyway. And I don’t wanna die knowing I ran around a city of healthy people and infected them’”(Dashner 185). The deprivation of mental stability plagues everyone with the Flare. However, I believe Thomas will stumble upon a cure due to the book’s title The Death
