The story of Eveline written by James Joyce shows is about a young girl who must decide whether to leave with frank into the unknown, or stay at home with her alcoholic father and her job. Moreover, her choices are all weighted down because of the external forces that she cannot control and her promise to her deceased mother. However, in the end Eveline made the choice to stay in the comfort of her home. Eveline was faced with a life changing choice, but she made the right decision to stay because she did not love frank and she will be ultimately safer at her home.
In the short story, Eveline was challenged with many choices that had life changing consequences for herself and the people around her. The first big choice she was faced with was to continue seeing Frank after her father forbid her to do so; which could’ve resulted in a huge argument and possibly a beating if her dad found out. Likewise this shows that overall Eveline is a strong individual who can make tough decisions when the consequences can be fatal. Another choice that she had to make was to leave with frank, who she did not love or stay at home with her …show more content…
father. Consequently, her choices were not easy to make because if she left she would abandon her siblings, her job and her father. However, at the same time if she stayed at home she would be miserable. At the end of the story Eveline decided to leave her home, but when she got to the peer where frank was she turned her back on him and decided to stay home.
If I was Eveline I would have made the same decision to stay home because the unknown can be scary and dangerous.
In addition I would not want to leave with someone who I can learn to love because transitioning to a new life with a love one is difficult enough, yet alone with someone who I do not love. For example, it would be difficult waking up every morning for the rest of my life with someone I’m learning to love. In the other hand, leaving the life I have always know would not be a decision I would make because it would mean exploring the unknown and risking the possibility of destroying my life if the relationship did not work. Furthermore, if I was in Eveline’s shoes I would not have left either because I would not want to defy my father and break the promise to stay at home that I made to my deceased
mother.
In conclusion, Eveline made the right decision to stay in the safety of her home, even though she might be miserable because she will be safer. In the other hand, if she would have left the relationship might not have worked given the fact that frank was a sailor, which are known to be bad.
