The Secret Life Of Bees Reflection Essay

“My breath came faster, and something coiled around my chest and squeezed tighter and tighter, until suddenly, like somebody had snapped off the panic switch, I felt myself go limp” (Kidd 150). The line form Sue Monk Kidd’s novel The Secret Life of Bees demonstrates how Lily Owens had felt throughout most of the book. Lily Owens has a young girl was blamed for killing her mother by her father, T-Ray. She grew up very curious and inspired. Within this journal I will be predicting what happened to Lily and her father T-Ray, evaluate where Lily and the family maid Rosaleen will go in the future and lastly I will be questioning the relationship between T-Ray and Lily.

Within the first couple chapters Lily Owens narrates the complex relationship between her and her dad. When she was very young she accidently shot her mother with a small handgun while her parents were arguing. Her father was extremely supercilious towards her mother. This quote can be viewed as Lily doesn’t need to have T-Ray to help guide her in life and showing how Lily is more than capable to be just fine with people that love and care about her. Lily and T-Ray never had the greatest relationship but in the end, things could have changed a long the way.

What I took from reading this wonderful novel was that major life events can alter the way you think or act on something but rising above the challenges will be more beneficial in the long run as Lily Owens demonstrates. She really changed her relationship with her father and learned to help people like Rosaleen, the maid and also herself along the
