James Rosenquist was a painter and a writer. At the early stage of his life, he was even a billboard painter. Rosenquist has had over 100 exhibitions displaying his work, numerous collections, a few art books, and even a popular writing, Painting below Zero: Notes on a Life in Art. He won an “Art in America Young Talent USA” award in 1963, the Golden Plate and American Academy of Achievement awards in 1988, and an award from the Fundacion Cristobal Gabarron in Valladolid, Spain in 2002. He was also inducted into the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1987 (“James Rosenquist”).
