Jamestown: The First Successful English Colony

5. James town was the first successful English colony and the people part of the colony had to follow certain rules to survive. The colony was first established by the Virginia Company London Group in May 6, 1607. The colony was located on the banks of the James River and when it began the people relied on the Indians to teach them how to plant and harvest crops. As the colony continued and slowly became independent from the Indians they built a three sided fort to protect themselves from the Indians and the Spanish. The people built a Church in the center of the fort and thatched huts to live in along with a store house.
