Her spirit was already low because she had to marry Logan and she didn't want to marry him. When she meat Joe she felt that a change in her spirit could change. So she ran off with Joe and left Logan. “So they were married there before sundown, just like Joe had said”(Page.39). She was on to the next husband. She felt all in until Joe killed her spirit by abusing her. Then the feeling that she has grown unattractive. “Stop mixin’ up man doing wit meh looks, Jody”(Page.93). Joe was calling her out for doing something wrong and she told him that her look don't have anything to do with her brain. Once Tea Cake came around her spirit glowed up. She was young and still looked young in her first marriage. Then she grows old with Joe. “Naw, Ah ain’t no young gal no mo’ but den Ah ain’t no old woman neither”(Page.94). Then when she hooked up with Tea Cake it was a big age differential. Janie felt 20 years younger when she was with Tea Cake so the age didn't matter. “At the newel post Janie whirled around and for the space of a thought she was lit up like a transfiguration”(Page.125). She felt young agin with this man and that’s what she wanted. As her body was getting old she was feeling older until Tea Cake came and made her feel young
