Janie Crawford's Their Eyes Were Watching God
“Their Eyes Were Watching God “is a story about Janie Crawford. A girl of mixed black and white heritage around the time of slavery. The story revolves around Janie’s relationships with other people. Janie’s search for spiritual enlightenment and a strong sense of her own identity.

This isn’t easy when the time you live in only knows you as either black or white.
We also look for a sense of identity in our own lives. Do the use of symbols in the story help paint us a picture of what Janie was going through?

As she looks to the “Horizon” as hope for her future to escape her past. Janie grew up with her grandmother in Eatonville, Florida.

She wants Janie to get married to someone who can provide security and social status for her. She had married three men Logan Killicks, Jody Starks and Tea Cake. The relationship with the three men make Janie as tuff as she pretends to be.

The reason why is because when she first kisses “Tea Cake “she “feels” for the first time in many years. Janie gets her voice back.
In the book and also movie by the same title "Their Eyes Were Watching God "Janie says,” she is where she wants to be. “Which means she has found real love. However, much like life and nature that can all change in a blink of a eye. They both had each other and that was good enough for them. No storm can take away what they have. The hurricane turned out to be an end to what was Janie's peace. Tea Cake got bitten by a dog with rabies. During the hurricane they questioned whether or not if God was going to kill them.

From what I’ve learned from (page 160)_ in the book .They said, "They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God."
This phrase is the namesake for the book. As Tea Cakes sickness begins to change him, he pulls out the gun which only has 1 bullet and three clicks come and go Janie realizes Tea Cake is no longer Tea Cake and she shoots him with a

In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston explored the journey of Janie’s life. Her experiences throughout the novel helped shape-shift Janie. Slavery had ended when Janie took her first step into womanhood. Janie was a young girl who believed in true love’s existence, leading her onto the search for true love. What she did not understand then was true love does not last forever, nor does it exist. Throughout her journey, she undergoes harsh obstacles which then, physically and mentally, changed her attitude on life. Janie’s life consisted of disappointment, discouragement, and discrimination that helped her learn and grow to become a person who cherishes everything in life more.…

Despite its references to race, racism is not the central theme of Their Eyes Were Watching God. Instead, Hurston weaves race and racism into the society and culture in which Janie lives, but chooses to focus more on Janie's life experiences as a human being than as a black woman. In some ways, by not exclusively or directly focusing on race, the novel can portray race and racism in the American South in the early 20th century with great complexity. Janie's unusual and beautiful appearance as a fair-skinned black woman living in the black American South sparks attention from the various communities she encounters throughout the novel, some of which are marked by racist attitudes.…

The author’s use of dialect in the novel demonstrates the difference between Janie’s relationship with Jody and Janie’s relationship with Tea Cake. When Janie is married to Jody, few conversations between the two of them are described using dialogue. Instead, the narrator simply explains Janie’s life with Jody and their interactions. When Janie is with Tea Cake, the author chooses to explain their relationship through the use of dialogue. Most of the time Janie spends with Tea Cake is shown through the conversations they have with one another. This demonstrates the connection and love between Tea Cake and Janie and the lack thereof in Janie’s relationship with Jody. The language in the novel also serves to demonstrate the value Janie places upon truth in language. Throughout the novel, the narrator speaks condescendingly about those who sit on their porches and gossip. She views gossip as speech without substance, and gossip is portrayed in a negative light. The language itself is not as important as the sincerity behind the words. For the most part, in the novel, the language is most powerful when there is truth behind it.…
