The current problem that is facing Janmar Coatings is how to cost effectively market the products and what area is the best place to market. Companies rely on the leadership to help make decisions regarding the market and after two senior executive meetings, there is no resolution.
2. Industry, Market, and Buyer Analysis provides an external analysis of the organization. Consider industry structure and performance; competitors’ strengths and weaknesses, and buyer behavior. Also consider whether the market can be segmented, and if so, whether the segments can be quantified. (15 points)

The US paint industry is an established industry. In 2004 it was just over a sixteen billion dollar industry. It is expected to grow steadily in line with the rate of inflation. The US paint coatings industry is divided into three parts or segments: architectural paint coatings, original equipment manufacturing coatings, and special purpose coatings. Forty-three percent of the market is held by architectural paint coatings. Architectural paint coatings are defined as general purpose paints, varnishes, and lacquers. It is used in the residential market, the commercial market and institutional structures. It is sold by wholesalers and retailers. Contractors, professional painters, and do-it yourself painters are the buyers. Thirty-five percent of the market is made up of original equipment manufacturing coatings. These are made specifically for an industrial buyer to use on products during manufacturing. These products include cars, trucks, appliances, furniture, and equipment. This would be used in the commercial market. It is sold by the manufacturer to a company manufacturing the product. The final segment of the market holds twenty-two percent, the special purpose coatings. The special purpose coatings are used for environmental applications. This

    Janmar Coatings, Inc., based in Dallas, Texas, is a privately held corporation that markets its architectural paint coatings and sundries (brushes, rollers, paint removers) in over 50 counties in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Louisiana. The company produces and sells architectural paint under their brand name. They also operate a large original equipment manufacturing coatings division. The company divides into the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metropolitan area and the non-Dallas-Fort Worth area. The 11 county Dallas-Fort Worth area is the major business and financial center. Their mission is to increase profit in the non-DFW and DFW category. In 2004, industry sales grew to $16 billion, with Janmar’s sales at $12 million. The net profit for the company before taxes was $1,140,000. Dollar sales had increased at an average annual rate of 4% per year over the past decade. Paint gallonage, however, had remained stable over the past 5 years. Ronald Burns said, “We have been very successful in maintaining our margins even with increased research and development, material and labor costs, but I’m afraid we’re approaching the threshold on our prices.” As a result, Janmar was now the highest-priced paint in their service area. In 2004, there were 60% net sales for paint cost of goods sold, including freight prices. Janmar is present in 200 independent stores, lumberyards, and hardware outlets. Retail outlets outside the Dallas-Fort Worth area with paint and sundry purchases exceeding $50,000 annually carry only the Janmar product line. There are 80 stores (40%) located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, 66 of which carry 2-3 competing brands. Burns discussed the DFW outlets and the effect of multiple lines has been to cause a decline in gallonage volume. The main issue Ronald Burns, the president of Janmar Coatings, is having is trying to come up with a solution to market his company in the most cost effective way during 2005. After 2 long meetings with his executive team he still has no clear direction. He has gathered an approach from each of his team members, including: VP of Advertising, VP of Sales, VP of Operations, and VP of Finance, and now has four solutions to consider. The VP of Advertising has proposed to increase corporate advertising with an large emphasis on television. The VP of Sales proposed hiring a new field representative to help generate new accounts. The VP of Operations has proposed a 20% price cut on all Janmar product sales. The VP of Finance proposed that nothing be done; that the company continue with their current efforts and keep a 35% contribution margin. After looking at the company’s overall goals and finances, I would agree with the VP of Sales. Based on his suggestion, I believe it would be a smart time to hire a new sales representative for Janmar. The cost attributed to company for hiring a new sales representative would be $60,000 per year. And the amount of sales revenue needed to cover this expense is $170,000. However, if this sales representative position is correctly used, they will be able to make this margin back rapidly. Because by concentrating on only developing new retail accounts in the non-DFW area, the company could generate lots of sales to a brand new buyer market.
