1. Fr. Walter Cizek faced many trials throughout his many years in Soviet Russia. Among the most testing of these trials were his years spent at the prison in Lubianka, being interrogated as a “Vatican spy.” Kept in isolation and left to his thoughts for years on end, he often turned to God and bible passages for support. However, even after all his prayer; he still fell to an interrogator’s methods. Turning once more to more fervent prayer, he comes to a realization that he had been praying all the wrong things. He recalls Jesus in the garden of Olives before his crucifixion, how he let God’s will be done. From then on, he strived to live following that principle in all things he did.…

Jennifer Thompson was a straight-A student at Elon University in Burlington, North Carolina. She had her life all planned out: maintain straight A’s, graduate with a 4.0 GPA, and marry her boyfriend, Paul. Jennifer said frightened “Who is that? Whose there?” I said, “Allowing myself to think it must be Paul, or someone playing a stupid joke” (12). Then suddenly she looked and saw a stranger in her room. Before she knew it, she was getting raped. During her attack, she made sure she paid attention to her attacker’s features and his voice. The rapist began to hiss “Shut up or I’ll cut you!” he hissed, “while clamping a glove hand down her mouth” (12). He proceeded to brutally rape her, with a knife at her throat. “I’m afraid of knives.” I told him, “I can’t relax until you put it down. Can you put it outside? On my car?” (15-16). Jennifer stayed as calm as possible, trying to remember as many details about her assailant as she could, until she managed to escape. She tried staying calm and having conversations with this man and stayed calm the entire time. When she had the chance and knew he wasn’t there she began to run and was shouting for help. As she ran screaming to the top of her lungs a nice family opened the door and let her in. They took care of Jennifer and took her to the hospital. Through an inept summary and analysis of Picking Cotton, readers will be able to understand key points throughout the book, and determine why or why not they should pursue reading the book.…

Several months later at the end of church service this writer’s friend came up and thank the writer for being their when they needed a lending ear. As I write, it is Holy Saturday. The latest issue of CPR arrived in this morning’s mail. Tomorrow I will proclaim the glorious and victorious resurrection of our Lord from the dead—the ultimate head-crushing of the devil. The events of Good Friday are fresh in my mind. As Jesus set his face toward Jerusalem with laser-like focus and intensity and stayed the course, the obvious, (albeit simplistic) answer for us is, likewise, “stay the course.”…
The boy, despite discouraging surroundings, experiences the ecstasy and pain of his first love. Every morning before school the boy lies on the floor in the front parlor peeking out through a crack in the blind of the door, watching and waiting for the girl next door to emerge from her house and walk to school. He is shy and still boyish. He follows her, walks silently past, not daring to speak. In his mind she is both a saint to be worshipped and a woman to be desired. His eyes are “often full of tears” and one evening he goes to the back room where the priest had died. Clasping the palms of his hands together, he murmurs, “O love! O love” in a prayer not God, but to the concept of love and perhaps…
A harsh environment, a range of detrimental influences and a rough childhood is what molded Henry Covington into the person he was. He grew up as a child with a religiously-followed way of faith. He went to church and prayed. His faith had a foundation, but that did not last long and everything in his life was shaken, shuddered, and transformed in all aspects of negativity. The once sweet boy, who lived a normal life, although poor, became an absolutely changed being. Cocaine, heroin, cigarettes, alcohol, robberies, accessory to murders, extortions, adultery— all of which he had tried, experienced, and as a matter of fact, enjoyed became his lifestyle. It became his oxygen that he breathed in order to stay alive. Innocent Henry was buried deep, deep down the lane of resentment, and there arose a rebel, a kingpin drug dealer, a delinquent, a bad man and no one, not even God, could stop him from falling downhill and crashing—hopeless and regretful. He has broken every single one of the Ten Commandments, there was no turning back for the new Henry that arose from his dark past. Chances after chances were granted to him by God. He repented, behaved for a few days, and went back to the illegal, dangerous, yet lucrative lifestyle he adored and never regretted. He wasted those small acts of…
