When Jasper requests Charlie discover the body of Laura Wishart, it can be seen that it depicts the loneliness of Jasper. The town where the story takes place, Corrigan, also symbolises Jasper’s isolated heart. Since Corrigan is located in rural areas, far from urban cities, it evokes a sense of detachment from society. Jasper, just like a candle in the dark, forsaken and lost. Corrigan is also personified by the excerpt "Corrigan was a town that wrapped its arms around you, holding you close, but also holding you back.” (Pg 131) This showcases the toxic and suffering background that harms and damages the people. The phrase "holding you back" indicates the town's secrets and gossip, which can limit a person’s freedom.
