would be, “Miss Adela Strangeworth stepped daintily along Main Street on her way to the grocery.” To me, dainty is a word that says she is a small lady. Also that she walks gently on her way. As you can tell from the evidence, Miss Strangeworth pulls off as a peaceful lady at the beginning of the story. Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering what the narrator says about her.
What the narrator says about her makes her sound very stern and selfish. She sometimes tells a little too much to people about how the town became to be. This makes me think that she is selfish by telling people these things. For example, “Miss Strangeworth would frown a little and sound stern- ‘but it should have been a statue of my grandfather. There wouldn’t have been a town here at all if it hadn’t been for my grandfather and the lumber mill.” She sounded very stern and selfish towards the people and visitors of the town. She thought the statue should have been of her grandfather. In addition, “Miss Strangeworth never gave out any of her roses, although the tourist often asked her.” This quote shows that she is selfish because she doesn’t want to give her roses away. People in the story might as well think she is selfish because she wouldn’t give people her roses. From this evidence, the author says she is stern, and the reader can tell she is
selfish. Miss Strangeworth’s character can be analyzed by considering how other characters interact with her. Miss Strangeworth is very discouraging towards the people that interact with her. Specifically, “Miss Strangeworth wondered, glancing at her quickly, if she had been taking proper care of herself. She discourages Mrs. Harper by how she looks and appears at the grocery store. To me, she shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. For instance, “Martha”, she said, “you don’t look well.” It’s very obvious that Miss Strangeworth is discouraging towards others. She is very discouraging just by telling the readers about how people look. In other words, looking at the ways she interacts with people, readers can tell she discourages people in the town. Miss Strangeworth’s character has been analyzed by considering what she does and says, what the narrator says about her, and how other characters interact with her. She has been seen as peaceful, stern, and discouraging. She acts in these three ways towards people in her community by what she says and her actions towards other people. Miss Strangeworth, being the lady she is, is mysterious and she will always keep you guessing.
