Jealousy In My Last Duchess
My Last Duchess is an incredibly unique, but yet invidious poem. Who once ever knew that back in the old ages, people got jealous. Throughout the poem, individuals begin to realize the real issue with the Duke. Is the Duke jealous or just bipolar? The definition of bipolar disorder is an affective disorder characterized by periods of mania alternating with periods of depression, usually interspersed with relatively long intervals of normal mood . The definition of jealousy is mental uneasiness from suspicion or fear of rivalry, unfaithfulness, etc., as in love or aims . Individuals might see these definitions and begin to compare and contrast the characteristics that the Duke portrayed throughout the poem. However, the Duke in My Last Duchess is driven by jealousy. …show more content…
The Duke was very possessive over his wife and made sure that the things she did, was the Duke’s way. There was a painting on the wall that the painter, Fra Pandolf, designed. The Duke puts a curtain over top of the painting and made sure that no one else took the curtain off but him. (Line 10) The Duke thought that he knew his wife more than anyone else did. Who would not think that about their spouse? The Duke would not let anyone take the curtain off, but also would not let anyone smile at her. Her smile meant everything to the Duke. His wife would smile at her husband, but when other men passed; her smile would stay the same as when she smiled at her husband. The Duke controlled his wife as well as what she was allowed to do. "How such a glance came there"? This question that crosses the Brownings mind, illudes too the fact that Fra Pandolf put the glance on the Duchess' face, by sexual activity. For example, "Fra Pandolf's hands worked busily a day", His hands may have been working in a sexual manner resulting in the Duchess' facial expression. Then the Duke says it in his own words and confesses his insecurity that the Duchess has been unfaithful. "twas not Her husbands presence only, called that spot of joy". This means that it was not only the Duke that was making the Duchess happy, it insinuates that she was being made happy through sexual connections with other men and particularly the painter because her wrists were out in the formal painting, this would have been forbidden. Perhaps the painter asked her to get her wrists out or perhaps they…

I am examining the characters of the Duke and Macbeth and how they can be considered disturbed characters. The play, ‘Macbeth’ and poem, ‘My Last Duchess’ both show psychological truths and insights into the characters. While the Duke shows himself to be disturbed straight away in the poem, Macbeth’s mental deterioration takes place and develops as the play proceeds. ‘Macbeth’ written by William Shakespeare and set in 1050 contains themes of status, power and death while ‘My Last Duchess’ by Robert Browning written in 1842 shows how status, wealth and the marriage market can affect a man’s life.…

Both of the writers have made their speakers very proud of things in their life, the duke in My Last Duchess is very proud of his 900 year old name he has given her and all his power and riches. But he is also very viscous in the poem and seems to not care about women as he treats them like objects in the time of patriarchal society “My Last Duchess” and “is my object”.…

There are numerous amounts of double meanings that come to mind, when analysing ‘My last duchess’. For example, the Duke states, ‘I gave commands and all smiles stopped together’ This quote means that the Duke has arranged for assassins, to have the duchess murdered, therefore, all of her smiles physically would have stopped. The other meaning for this quote is that the Duke gave orders, to murder the duchess; as a result, everyone around the duchess, such as family and friends, stopped…

Brush's portrayal of the relationship shared between the husband and wife in this story is one that deals with the superiority issue between a husband and wife. The wife plans “a little surprise” for her husband, he is “hotly embarrassed” by it and scolds her “under his breath- some punishing thing, quick and curt and unkind” after her surprise has lost the attention of others in the restaurant. The husband masks any kindness or gratitude he could have shown to his wife for taking him out to eat on his birthday and instead replaces that kindness and gratitude by indignation and hotness. Too practical for superficial romance, the husband can be seen as asserting his position as the head of the household through his obsession with his position in society. .…

The effect of the dying husbands to lapdogs juxtaposition is that husbands and lapdogs in regular conditions are compared to be equal, and husbands are then portrayed as followers of their wives, eating out of their hands and obeying every command. Juxtaposition is also found in line 91, where fish, birds, and carriages are compared for fulfilling their duties in a happy way: swimming fish, happy flying birds, carriages driving. Directly after that, in lines 93-4, “as long as Atalantis shall be read, or the small pillow grace a lady’s bed,” a book of scandal is being read and a pillow is in its place. Declaring scandal and neat rooms are combined to be regular things in their proper order.…

“My Last Duchess” is told in first person with the narrator being a participant in the story. A painting of an ex-wife influences the narrator to tell the narratee of his ex-wife. As the narrator discusses the painting of his wife, he paints a picture of the woman for the reader. This gives the reader insight into the narrator’s emotions. What we know about the narrator is that he is a wealthy duke about to get remarried. By the duke’s tone of voice and choice of words when he rants on about the painting of his last duchess, the reader also can assume that duke’s jealously has driven him to murder his last wife. For example, the duke states “Oh, sir, she smiled, no doubt, Whene’er I passed her; but who passed without Much the same smile? This grew; I gave commands; Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands As if alive.”(Browning 418). This point of view and how the story is told is interesting and shapes the story. As the duke ponders and speaks of the painting it is as if his emotions of love, jealously, and anger are provoked just as if she was still there. Also, this point of view allows the narrator too slowly, and maybe accidently, revile his madness to the reader and the narratee. What motivates the narrator to tell the story is unknown. We know that the narratee is associated with the narrator’s soon to be wife, so we have to wonder why the duke is…

We know the Duke had complete control over because he was able to talk as if she was an inanimate object but near the end of the poem he says ‘I gave commands then all smiles stopped together’. The specific use of ‘command’ shows that her husband had the power to order her to do what he wanted and had the control in this relationship. The fact that all smiles stopped together shows that he had so much dominance and power that she stopped all together. He Victorian audience would be able sympathize with this situation because during those times the males had an ownership over females. This shows that the husband had more power and was superior in this relationship. Like ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ the husband seemed to be more powerful than the…

Browning's particular word choice in this dramatic monologue steers the reader to believe that over time the Duchess' flirtatious nature becomes more difficult for the Duke to handle. As he says to the emissary, "Sir, 'twas not / Her husband's presence only, call that spot / Of joy into the Duchess' cheek," (12-14) the Duke begins to explain how she is charmed by anyone, and "too easily impressed" (24). In addition to being overly impressed by gifts from "officious fools," (27) the Duke is especially upset as he says, "she ranked / My gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name / With anybody's gift." By marrying the Duchess the Duke gave her the gift of nobility, and she now holds a higher social rank. He feels that that gift alone should maintain her happiness, and commitment to him. The Duke's anger, and jealously have now escalated, and the reader begins to question what his madness will carry him to do. Another meticulous selection of words Browning uses is, " Oh, sir, she smiled, no doubt, / Whene'er I passed her; but who passed without / Much the same smile? This grew; I gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together." (43-46) The poem has now turned very mysterious, how was the Duchess executed, and who other than the Duke is…

Few people can grow up within today's society without knowing the tale of Snow White. From the Grimm Brothers to Disney, it has been told and retold to children throughout the ages. However, what is often overlooked are the true meanings within the story. Fairytales typically have underlying messages that can be found between the lines, generally in terms of the key themes. Snow-White discusses the theme of jealousy, and shows how humans' obsessions of material can lead to their own downfall as well as the harm of others. When focusing on the relationship between Snow-White and her stepmother the Queen, it is evident that the jealousy inside the story results in a power struggle in which beauty and pride are seen as the basis for the stepmother’s envy towards Snow-White. “This gave the queen a great shock, and she became yellow and green with envy, from that hour her heart turned against Snow-White, and she hated her.”…
