2. Buddy Bolden- Trumpeter (1877-1931) He was known as the “Father of Jazz”. However, due to his drinking habits and a full diagnosis of dementia praecox, he was admitted to the Louisiana State Insane Asylum at Jackson, a mental institution, where he spent the rest of his life.
3. Sidney Bechet- Clarinetist (1897-1959) He never recorded his music and at live performances would request a drape be placed over his hands as he place because he wanted no one to copy his playing style.
4. Louis Armstrong- Trumpet (1901-1971) Because of his large mouth, he was nicknamed "satchel mouth"
which became shortened to Satchmo. He wasn’t the first to do it, but he was masterful at scat singing and helped popularize it with the first recording on which he scatted, "Heebie Jeebies".
5. Thelonious Monk- Pianist (1917-1982) He performed at Minton’s playhouse in the early to mid-40’s where he developed his unique style and even connected with musicians Dizy Gillespie and Charlie Parker to create what is known as Bebop.
6. Miles Davis- Trumpeter (1926-1991) Having the reputation he did with drugs at one point in his career, his habits were overlooked as he is probably the most popular name in jazz for performing with Charlie Parker, giving birth to cool jazz, playing alongside John Coltrane and so many greats, and also creating Jazz Fusion in the 70’s.
