My main purpose for joining JEP is to provide service to my local community. With this in mind, I believe I can gain valuable skills for my willingness to open to the community. By committing my Fridays to attending John Mack Elementary school, I will be engaging in my University Park neighborhood. This
is my first time hearing about this school, which showcases the potential to cultivate greater awareness of the neighborhood. At the same time, I will also be able to develop conscious of others whether it is their geography, history, and social status.
These factors are very important in cultivating a student’s identity. Being able to have empathy to these students, I would get a better understanding of occupational therapy. Most occupational therapist has the skill of having empathy in order to connect to their patients. These connection is important to cultivating a trustful relationship to facilitate a better experience giving the service. In addition, the receiver would definitely receive the most benefits for the service. I believe I would receive the most development in this area of empathy through my practices of getting to know my students, which correlates with the practical principles of occupational therapy.
Despite of these factors that makes up the students whom I would be working with, I am thrilled to developing soft skills, such as collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, public speaking, and adaptability. Being assigned to work in a mini-team, I would be put to the challenge of collaborating with others that may be totally different to me. Cultivating critical thinking and problem solving skills would be essential to maintaining effective, efficient working environment among the team. Lastly, I believe I would develop stronger public speaking skills and adaptability by working in the team to develop and executing lessons plans to a classroom of student. With practice of communicating to other people, I believe I will to adapt to different scenarios on the spot. These skills I hope to acquire with my experience with JEP makes me excited to the threshold that nerves will soon be eliminated.
