For those of you who may, or may not, know, Jeremy Hunt is the lunatic in charge of the nation’s Health. He is also the man who wishes to impose a ludicrous new contract onto our junior doctors, which you most probably heard about in the news.
In short, the contract extends what is currently considered as ‘social working hours’ to include times that, frankly, are not very social - making between 07:00 to 22:00 on Monday to Saturday part of a junior doctor's normal working week.
Hunt claims to rectify this with his offer of an 11% ‘pay rise’. This, of course, was a trump card in public delusion and political spin. It sounds too good to be true, and it is. The 11% increases basic pay - but in reality, most doctors’ salaries are heavily reliant on additional money from out-of-hours work, which will be cut. Even the way his offer was announced to the public - through the press rather than official routes - meant that he got what he so desperately wanted - all the headlines.
Hunt seems driven to paint a picture in the press of our beloved doctors as work-shy, money-grabbing and overpaid professionals.
In reality, the dispute with the junior doctors was never about them asking for more money — it started when Hunt tried to introduce contracts that meant cuts to pay.
The BMA, the trade union for doctors, and medics themselves have raised compelling concerns about the safety of the new contract, arguing that it removes financial penalties which stop hospitals from making doctors work excessive hours, and reducing training opportunities, resulting in an overall depletion in quality of
