Jersey Shore The television show known as Jersey Shore that aired on MTV for six seasons. The first time it aired was in December of 2009 and it was a huge hit. There were many controversies before they aired the show because it was an MTV reality show that reminded the viewers of The Real World. The show followed all eight housemates around day in to day out whether they were working during the day or partying at night. The fact that all random characters met up in a house to live for a summer together made viewers want to watch and see what will come about. Since the cast was followed around all of the time they would catch every minute of the exciting thing happening. They were able to cut out the dull, uninteresting parts so the viewers did not waste their time and cut to the chase. The critics were thinking negative thoughts before it aired and the controversy if the show Jersey Shore had a positive or negative impact on society. Jersey Shore was looked as a bad influence to younger views and nothing good was coming from it. Others look up to these characters as role models and follow in some of their footsteps. In the show Jersey Shore there are many different specific reasons why critics disliked the show. One reason of the reasons why the show was judged before it aired was because of the way the trailer made it seem foreshadowed it was going to be a bad influence to a younger crowd. The trailer looked as if it was only for a certain age range and this was difficult because even though the television blurts out the curses you cannot restrict an age limit for a tv show and what viewers and see. However there are certain topics you cannot just blurt out. The characters in the show openly talk about sexual intercourse as if they were being paid to talk about it. They even have a designated room called the “smush room” where come home from a night of partying, bring back a stranger and sleep in this room.

Relationships are avoided like a plague, and sex and making out are treated as if they’re no big deal. When the cast goes out drinking and partying, their drunkenness almost always gives way to promiscuity. They make out with strangers in bars, and bring random people home constantly. This gives a negative image to young people about sex. Only a few people on the show didn’t avoid serious relationships. Their relationships do not show relationships in a positive light either. There is constant arguing and infidelity. Some of the people in the relationships allow themselves to be mistreated all the time, which gives a negative example to younger people. If your only examples of sexual activity and relationships came from images like this, you could develop an extremely unhealthy…

Wyatt refers to the genre as “humiliation tv” and says it has the ability to “bring out the worst in anyone” (159). Jersey Shore definitely brought out the worst in the castmates. Nicholas Mill said, “reality television created a culture of humiliation where no one-participants nor producers nor audience members- comes away with his or her dignity intact” (160). Yet, although the cast members may have been humiliated by appearing on the show, they agreed to be on it. They are all consenting adults who willingly took part in this show and were aware they were being filmed/…

In the show Jersey Shore the cast demonstrates a number of stereotypes such as gender roles, a difference between male and a female, the behaviors of Italian American and the lives of young adults’. Some might think Jersey Shore is a good show to watch; however it shows the negative behavior and attitudes towards men, women and young adults in many ways. The show also sets a poor example for viewers by presentation these stereotypes in a negative way. After reading the Academic research and the article “The Reality Television of Reality Television” by Mark Greif it exposed me why these stereotypes are not good for the cast as well as for the viewers.…

Do the names, Snooki, D.J. Pauly D, The Situation, or J-Woww, ring a bell? What about the famous sayings, “grenade whistle,” “G.T.L,” or “Jersday,” now is it making more sense? MTV’s hit reality show, Jersey Shore, has coined these terms and has become a worldwide phenomenon. The cast of Jersey Shore started out as typical teenagers living their typical lifestyles. Before the reality show premiered, some of the cast woke up everyday to their monotonous jobs, while others attended college. These eight teenagers never knew that by starring in this one television show, their lives would never be the same. Jersey Shore follows eight hardcore Italians, four guys and four girls, who spend their summer months together. Instead of living like there is no tomorrow, these roommates party like there is no tomorrow! Everyday when they wake up, they get their “G.T.L” on, which means Gym, Tan, and Laundry. At night, they get completely drunk, go to the bars, and see how many guys/girls they can bring back home. Then, they wake up and do it all over again the next day. This does not sound like a normal, healthy lifestyle that these eight roommates are living now, does it? Unfortunately, these eight cast members have become idolized by young and old viewers all around the world. MTV obviously does not believe in censorship, and Jersey Shore’s lifestyle of alcohol and sexuality is being portrayed positively in society. People worship every little move the Jersey Shore makes. Advertisers are using the cast to promote their products because of how influential these eight roommates have become. Even as we speak, on television, Ron promotes a particular weight loss substance and Snooki promotes a certain brand of cashews. These partiers are setting negative trends in society because the large consumption of alcohol and sexual actions made these eight people known all over the world. By partying all day, everyday, these…

In fact, they form the nation's most rapidly expanding age group” (Waters, 1982). Jersey Shore is a reality television show similar to that of “The Real World” and markets binge drinking, partying, fake tanning, and sleeping all day. It seems that the drama-driven cast seems to be promoting a careless way of life, and in fact might be rubbing off on its viewers. Elderly people are rarely seen on the show, and the stars are constantly shown going out with other young people, and going to bars and clubs that consist of other people around their age group. Even though some of the stars on the show are in their 30’s, they still live a constant partying lifestyle and act as though they are still young and essentially do not have to grow up yet. Teenagers watching this show can see this lifestyle as normal and strive to live their life the same way. The stars in the show live in a nice house and are constantly spending money, even though they only work at a pizza, ice cream and t-shirt company. In reality, these types of jobs would not cover the type of expenses these lifestyles come with. This lifestyle is extremely glamorized and in reality, someone living the same lifestyle as these stars would not be living nearly as luxuriously as they do, due to the success rate they have gained from the show. Many of these stars are on the front of magazines and all over different television talk shows because their show has become so successful…

The television network WB started off in the 1990's with a program called 7th Heaven that was designed to target families who wanted to watch television together. When the program was losing ratings, the producers added steamier kissing scenes to compete with the newer dramas and sitcoms. When 7th Heaven couldn't compete, the WB launched Dawson's Creek; a teen drama based on the ‘lives' of teens. The teens talked about sex constantly and their lives revolved around it. When teens see these idyllic celebrity teens in the media, they idolize them. This idolization leads to mimicking behavior, and before long, the teens are engaging in sexual behavior much like that in television (and other media). Television producers are apt to use what they see in pop culture and find out what teens are doing, and push that a little farther, to make it more appealing to their teen audiences, thereby hyping teen sexuality even further. Television shows such as Dawson's Creek that continuously exceed their own standards of what's sexually appealing to the teen masses episode after episode are what drive the sexual economy in the eyes of a…
