Jim was still in the Junior High School in his last year. Jim always wanted to be one of the national football player and always wanted to play as good as his brother, despite of his small body. Everyday, Jim always practiced football in his front garden. One day, his friend, Marco saw him and he said “Hey, why don’t you join our school football team?” but Jim replied “I think I can’t join because I am too small.” Marco was the current captain in their football team. Then Marco smile and said to Jim “Don’t ever think about that. I see your big potential and I think if you practice more, you can be as good as the others.” Jim didn’t know what to do so he only said that he would think about it. Seems like Marco could read his mind, he said to Jim “and also if you join the team, you can be one of the player to play in the annual tournament this year.” Marco helped Jim to join the school team but the coach said to Marco “Don’t you think that Jim is too small? How can he be so good at football?” but Marco only said “Just try him, coach.” From that moment, Jim’s football career was increasing. His ability brought him to the local team but he couldn’t continue to the national team because the coach, Jefferson, always said that he was too small even tough he had taken every sorting test they made. Because of that, Jim’s career stuck in the local team but Tom could join the national team. One day, Tom asked Jim to help him and his teammates practicing their new techniques. “Okay. I also want to enter the sorting test again,” Jim agreed. And then both of them went to the stadium together. There, Jim once again met Coach Jefferson. “Coach, let me enter the test again,” asked Jim. “I have told you that you can’t join the team, right? Don’t you remember?” said Coach Jefferson. “Please, this will be the last time. If I don’t make it, I’ll go home,” Jim begged. “No. I have a busy schedule today. And no means no,” Coach Jefferson refused. Jim sighed. He walked to the audience seat in the stadium, waiting his brother to finish his practice. A few moments later, he saw Coach Jefferson was sitting on the audience seat in front of him, together with a man and his child. They seemed to be discussing something. Jim was curious about what were they talking about, so he put his ears on. Jim looked at the child, he was about Jim’s age, and his body wasn’t bigger than Jim. “Coach, let my son join the team,” the man said. “I’m sorry Sir, but his body is too small. He can’t join,” said Coach Jefferson. “Please, Coach. I’ll give you money if you let my son join,” said the man again. “Hmm… very well, Sir. Please remember to send $500 to my bank account this week, and your son will officially become a team member,” Coach Jefferson agreed. Jim was shocked. He quickly told his brother about that. “You must be joking! Coach Jefferson wouldn’t do something like that!” said Tom. “But it’s the truth! I saw him did that!” Jim yelled. “Okay, if you said so, let’s talk to the manager tomorrow,” Tom replied. The next day, the brothers told the manager, Mr. Lerman, about what Coach Jefferson did. “Little kid, are you sure he did that?” asked Mr. Lerman. “Yes! I saw him! He’s cheating!” said Jim. “You’re lying,” said Mr. Lerman. “No, Sir, my brother wasn’t lying,” said Tom. “Yes he was, he doesn’t have any proof of that. Now, I’m busy, so get out of my office!” “This is useless,” said Jim to Tom. “Maybe I shouldn’t have been in football from the beginning.” “Jim, you’re wrong. Someday you might be a good football player, better than me,” Tom encouraged him. “But you know that everyone is saying that I’m too small,” said Jim hopelessly. “Don’t give up. You just have to show them your ability,” said Tom.
In another day, Tom asked Jim to follow him to the stadium.
“Mr. Lerman wants to see you,” said Tom. When they arrived at the stadium, Jim was a little bit nervous. “Don’t worry, there’s something for you,” said Tom. Then they entered the manager’s office. Mr. Lerman was sitting on his chair as usual. And he was smiling to Jim. “Um? What happened?” Jim was confused. “Jim, remember when you said that Coach Jefferson was cheating?” asked Mr. Lerman to him. Jim nodded. “What you said, is actually true. A few days ago, I saw what he did and report it to the director. He’s already fired now. I’m so sorry I didn’t trust you that time,” Mr. Lerman apologized. “It’s okay, Sir,” said Jim. “As an apology, also a reward, I’ll let you join the national team. Tom said that your skills were awesome, I’d like to see you play as a team member, how about that?” said Mr. Lerman. Jim was surprised. “Of course! Thankyou so much!” Jim answered
happily.
Since then Jim played football together with his brother in one team. He could bring his team into the international football match. Together, they also win a lot of championships. Jim always remembered that one quote: “Your physical condition can’t stop you from reaching your dreams.”
