Readers can sometimes feel a touch of sadness when the author talked about Langan. It is such a variety of kind people who try and create a huge change and outcome in the world, because of his experiences with the whole stiff civilization. Sadly, Langan did not have the good chance to come across a good adviser. Langan’s mentor would be able to guide him and let him know that specifically because the society is like, and precisely because he experienced it and felt most sturdily about it, that he must have the nerve to create change. This somewhat talks about path reliance. Not considering whether one is super genius or not, the information that Langan came from a dysfunctional family, meant he is destined to unsuccessful evermore.…
In life, everybody faces obstacles that have to be encountered. Sometimes they are good, and other times they are bad. I think it’s the individual coping with these new experiences that leads to significant rewards and life skills that help make growing up and transitioning into society easier.…
First, when I look at the authors push to get an education I see in Richard Rodriguez’s essay that he was very motivated. He started as a young boy with an accent striving to learn more and attain knowledge whenever he could because he knew of the benefits. In the story Rodriguez says that he shifted away from family life to study more and learn more from his teachers. He wanted school rather than his uneducated family. In contrast, Mike Rose clearly didn’t want to be in school, he wanted an easy way out of things. Rose explains he was put in vocational classes by accident, but decided to stay in the classes with the lower level students. He explains how the teachers could care less about the student’s education which affected Rose because he saw himself and everyone as being average.…
Adjacent to that the author shows the readers the different experiences in which he learned the lessons that made him appreciate the opportunity to go to college. I agree with the author when he talks about “Factory life has shown me what my future might have been like had I never gone to college in the first place (Braaksma, 2005).” I agree because working a real-world job can help you see how college is possibly a better path to a successful career. I feel this way because of my own experiences working at various jobs over the years. Furthermore, when the author goes deeper into his experiences by saying “All the advice and public-service announcements about the value of an education that used to sound trite now ring true (Braaksma,…
Jimmy Santiago Baca’s A Place to Stand shows the change Baca goes through while in prison for six and a half years. With several charges of drug possession, no one believed he would be a better person. However, through the power of poetry, he managed to become an incredible writer, he was able to come out of prison a new man. Many believe that the prison system needs a reform, that people going in are the same or even worse when coming back out. Yet, Baca was different, he managed to stay away from wrongdoings through poetry. His poems , “I am Offering This Poem”, “Who Understands Me but Me”, and “Immigrants in Our Own Land” convey multiple messages of character transformation that the author depicts within his prison memoir A Place to Stand.…
Jimmy Santiago Baca at 20 was convicted of drug charges and sentenced to prison. He was completely illiterate when he went to Prison. But when he got out five years later, he was becoming one of America's favorite poets. Baca started to write about oppression, love and migration. Malcolm X was a street hustler that was convicted of robbery. He spent seven years in prison, where he educated himself. Him learning how to read helped himself become one of the most well known African American, and a disciple of Elijah Muhammad, founder of the Nation of Islam. In both Malcolm X and Bacas Books they tell us about the process of how they taught themselves how to read. These are both incredible stories because they defied the odds and were able to develop into great people and incredible writers.…
As some college students spend their summers working part-time jobs and spending time with friends, this is not the case for Andrew Braaksma. He spends his summer breaks on an assembly line at a factory. Braaksma has been working in the factory since he got out of high school and he has learned some valuable lessons about life. In “Some Lessons from the Assembly Line” Braaksma comes to the realization that his choice to continue education and go onto college allows him better opportunity and experience to thrive beyond the low paying job of a factory worker with a high school education, at best.…
The essay by Mike Rose made me really think about the purpose of education schools have to offer us. He talks about how a basic exam can determine your whole life; it made me really think about how accurate these tests really are. The purpose of this essay seemed to be how he feels students failures isn’t because of us, its because of the school system overall. He shares how the vocational track is basically portrayed as students who are not motivated to learn. The question he makes us think about is, why are these students so unmotivated to learn? He states how for the most part the teachers are the ones who are not motivated enough to teach them. Basically the teachers have to be there because it’s their job, and from the moment of the student’s first grade the teachers automatically think that they’re UN teachable. Students believe whatever the teacher says so they start believing that their stupid and so they wont try. Later on in the book, Rose talks about Jack MacFarland. He descries him as a unique person, because even though he’s a teacher he puts work to make students understand that all teachers are not the same.…
Jimmy boy slowly became the teacher and I the pupil. Sadly enough, Jimmy boy died a tragic and untimely death. Even though Jimmy boy is no longer with us, his divine thoughts made me ultimately abandon my own ‘American Dream’ and return to my country with a purpose of working for the poor. I am yet to fulfill my ambition (rather his dream), but yes I can say with some comfort that I have done quite a bit since the time I left the…
Martin Luther King once said “Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase”. Alike several others in this world Martin saw the potential each and every person in the world carried. But instead of sitting around he acted on this potential. He saw that he could make a difference in this world, achieve his hopes and dreams of a better future, and he took that opportunity. Unlike Martin Luther King many people in today’s society don’t act on their opportunities. Rather we decide that we weren’t meant for that or that someone else could do it better.…
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it’s the courage to continue that counts”(Winston Churchill). Life is dependent on our dreams. If you ever fail along the way to your success, you’ll be tempted to get yourselves right back and continue your journey. Although, if ever found yourself to be successful, would you stop there? Or would you have the courage to continue and set higher goals for yourself? In the book “Breaking Through” in which Francisco Jimenez is the main character and author, he faces many obstacles. Although, Francisco has encountered multiple obstacles, he has many characteristics, which are being responsible, ambitious and respectful.…
“Don’t be discouraged and give up just because it’s hard” (Kamkwamba, Pg. 275). William Kamkwamba, a man from Malawi, had to raise above all problems he encountered in his young life to be the successful man he is today. Several things drive people to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Although, William and I have lived two completely different lives we have both experienced, trouble managing time, an extreme life-changing situation, and excruciating physical pain; we were determined to face our problems so we were able to be successful.…
I want to explore how far my imagination can take me. I believe that the ‘educated hope’ that Cornel West and Paolo Friere write about is possible. I need to do the work to imagine a path to that kind of hope and that kind of future. From the ‘Pockets of Hope’ article, I can see that I can’t walk the path alone. I need to imagine the future for myself however, so that I can utilize the power-with. If I don’t have the path before me clear, I don’t think I will be very good at finding strength with others. I also need to answer this question in order to be capable of the kind of self-care that I think I will need. I don’t want to take care of myself by escaping the world. I want to be able to care for myself by going back to the world that I can imagine. After reading about the inequities in California in Pedro Noguero’s ‘City Schools’, I felt that I needed to imagine some way out of the dilemma that he…
Everyone is put on this earth with a different circumstance, or opportunities. Everyone has challenges they go through throughout life. We all deal with our problems and obstacles differently. Everyone has the chance to succeed. Not everyone has the same opportunity to, but everyone has the chance to. People have different lives and situations. Some are people are born with all the money they could ever need, and others work all day, just to buy food for their family. Whether you have been working since you were a child, or whether you don’t work until you finish college, you have an opportunity to succeed.…
Overcoming obstacles is hard, and that causes us to give up easily. However, we might defeat obstacles if we keep persisting. Mark Salzman thought he would never teach well before he came to Juvenile Hall. He thought that was very difficult for those boys writing good writings due to their backgrounds. Also, he…
