a palm. To begin, first, you must rip the core of the Jippi Jappa leaves. The leaves contain many smaller leaves inside. Using a knife cut open the central core of the leaf that holds those smaller leaves in place. After you have removed the central core you will be left with the soft fibers.
There will be two different types of fibers, green and tan.
Gather about six to eight fibers and tie the ends together. Green fibers with green fibers and tan fibers with tan fibers. After they have all been grouped it is time to wash the fibers. Boil the tan fibers for 10 minutes and then let them dry. Do not cook the green fibers, leave them out to dry along with the tan fibers for 2 ½ days.
Once your fibers have dried, the weaving process with begin. There are two colors you can have for your basket, light or dark. The tan fibers will create a light basket and green a dark basket. To begin weaving, take the desired fiber and stretch it. Make a small ring or coil at the end and thread a needle with string or a Jippi Jappa fiber through the middle of the coil and loop around and pull tight. This will keep it in place.
Continue the weaving process of making a coil and threading the needle through. With each new coil include parts of the previous one to hold the whole thing in place. Remember, you are starting the base of the basket. Once you have reached the desired size of the base you will begin to make the sides. To make the sides weave the strands of the outer coil in a vertical or diagonal
means.
When ever the strands of fibers run out just add the next one to the end of the last one and continue weaving. After some experience you cran play arounf with patterns and using different colors. Small baskets usually take a day to weave, the bigger the basket the more time it will take. When you finish your basket leave it out to dry in the sun for at least a day to make sure that it is completely dry before using it.
Now you have a basket ready for use. You can use it for laundry, food, books, knick-knacks or just a decoration. Also, you have something to be proud of, something to show off to your friends. I bet you won’t find a basket as creative and fun as the one you made at the market.
