The whole team was on the field lined up behind first base, getting ready to practice sliding into second. I was very nervous about sliding. I messed it up every other time I did it before, so as you can imagine I was feeling very nervous and tense. I made sure I was in the middle of the line, not first or last.
I watched a few girls go first. I really didn’t want to mess up this time. When I realized I was up next I got really tense. I started running not even thinking about what I was doing. As soon as I hit the ground I felt a heart wrenching throb in my leg. I remember not being able to think about anything but the agonizing pain. For a minute I didn’t even want to open my eyes. At that moment I was wishing I could be anywhere else. I hated having to just sit in the middle of the softball field, I could feel everyone’s eyes staring straight at me.
When I was eleven years old I broke my leg during softball practice. It was two months before school got out for summer vacation. We hadn’t even had a game yet.
