Definition Essay
Joan Rivers coined the phrase “Can we talk?” What an effective phrase to use in reaching her audience as she conveyed her message. The audience listened, received and responded to the message. Joan Rivers was communicating. Communication is defined as the process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of verbal, written, symbols, sign or behavior. All living things communicate, and we do it every day, whether it’s verbally or nonverbally, formal or informal. What may be considered appropriate in one culture may be insulting in another. Although technology certainly allows us to be interconnected globally, oral communication will always be the driving force in human interaction. So let’s put away the smart phones, video games, and end your social media addiction. Replace Face time with face to face time, an emoji certainly can’t replace a hug, nor can a yellow smiley face replace a warm smile, but positive communication can certainly enhance and nurture relationships.
