John Doe: A Short Story
The wind whispered through the decrepit building like a thousand ghostly voices. It carried the scent of sulfur, and the nauseating smell of gunpowder; with the slight, damp dusting of rain from above. The sky peeked through small holes in the ceiling; piercing with its gray veil of death, though John Doe was at ease with the crackling of his fire. He poked the coals tenderly and supplied what must have been a chair leg, with intricate carvings and beautiful polished wood. John got up swiftly, ruffling his dark brown hair with callused hands. He flicked his eyes towards the door with a cat-like annoyance and approached it slowly as to not make a sound; stopping almost a foot away from it. A knock sounded through the hollow wooden door breaking the silence now that the fire had ran out of fuel. John clutched his left hip as he flung open the door ready to flee or fight. The wind voiced his thoughts with its sudden silence. When he looked outside, it was as if all color had been taken from the world, and all that was left were drab shades of black and gray. White dust crowded the narrow streets and everything else in between; small spots turned a deeper color as rain …show more content…
He turned his head instinctively and saw two men emerge from around the houses corner. Their lips moved but no sound came out, and they raised their rifles in unison. John Doe dove to the left; death getting all too close. He ran, for what seemed like hours but might have only been seconds. Wind whipped past his hair and into mouth filling his world with sensory deprivation. He could only hear ringing; he could only taste gunpowder; and he could only see gray. He felt like a rabid wolf; he was hunted and hungry; his ribs poking through his chest all too much. He only noticed it now but it seemed as if all his teeth were

As the wind screeched ominously and the lightning crackled in the sky, the people decided to retreat to the warmth of their houses. The candles were dimmed and the shutters were closed and the streets were mostly deserted. The storm blew all night and the next morning dawned fresh and blue. Nobody would have thought that just the previous night, an ugly storm had brewed up in that place.…

He let the ministries zip past (the pink, the white), and a series of stores on the main street, their windows flash ing. Now he was beginning the most pleasant part of the run, the real ride: a long street bordered withtrees, very little traffic, with spacious villas whose gardens rambled all theway down to the sidewalks, which were barely indi cated by low hedges. Abit inattentive perhaps, but tooling along on the right side of the street, heallowed himself to be carried away by the freshness, by the weightlesscontraction of this hardly begun day. This involuntary relaxa tion, possibly, kept him from preventing the accident. When he saw that the womanstanding on the corner had rushed into the crosswalk while he still had thegreen light, it was already somewhat too late for a simple solu tion. Hebraked hard with foot and hand, wrenching him self to the left; he heard thewoman scream, and at the collision his vision went. It was like falling asleep all at once. He came to abruptly. Four or five young men were get ting him out from under the cycle. He felt the taste of salt and blood, oneknee hurt, and when they hoisted him up he yelped, he couldn't bear the presssure on his right arm. Voices which did not seem to belong to thefaces hanging above him encouraged him cheerfully with jokes and assurances. His single solace was to hear someone else confirm that thelights indeed had…

The gas consumed his lungs growing tighter each second. Not even I could imagine the pain that was growing in him. The whites of his eyes glowed amongst the blood that was starting to evolve around the creases of his lips. His hand opening and closing, his fingertips searching for something to clasp onto to stop the pain… they fall upon the hem of my pants with a grip of an eagle. As he held my pants for his refuge the words he mumbled will never leave me. ‘Tel…tell them…tell them I said bye’. As his body became limp on my feet the words and noise of the other men became apparent again.…

The first hour and a half we listened to the birds and watched the squirrels eat away at the trail mix. The sight of this made me hungry so I got out my peanut butter sandwich and red Gatorade. Around 4:45, I was lightly sleeping when I heard a loud snap from a few hundred yards away. My mind began racing as I tried to figure out what could have made that noise. Every couple minutes I could hear another branch break and it was getting closer and closer. An hour later the noise had moved from a few hundred yards in front of us to less than 30 yards behind us. “Don’t move” my dad whispered. We could hear leaves crunching under the feet of whatever was behind us. The noise continued onto the path that leads right to the bait pile. I slowly turned my head to the left and saw a 325-pound bear with a furry, black coat. Instantly my breathing became heavy, my whole body was shaking and my heart was about to pound out of my chest. I grabbed by gun and raised it to my shoulder, almost dropping it from all my shaking. I rested my Remington pump shotgun on the chilly aluminum edge of the Rivers Edge tree stand. “Click” I took the safety off of my shotgun and looked down the iron sights. The bear was licking the frosting on top of the white cedar log. BANG! The bear spun and took off into the thick green underbrush and fell after 20 yards. I couldn’t believe it; I was so excited. My dad and I waited 30 minutes and then we got down from the tree stand and followed the trail to where the bear was laying. I reached down and touched the smooth, plush coat of the bear, thanking it for the meat it would provide for my…

It seemed like I was wandering into a different dimension. My senses were becoming acquainted to new feelings: guttural whispers, excruciating odour, ponderous glass-like air and the cemented, pungent, taste of death! As I opened the door candlelight rose to greet me but who lit them? I was informed that the secluded house I was purchasing has been unoccupied forever.…

As he sat stiff backed and upright in the hard wooden chair, Jotham looked around anxiously. He could only see three of the walls, and the ceiling, if he craned his neck upwards, but that was enough to make him very uneasy indeed. They were grey and bare - not silver grey, but a horrible murky grey, that made it seem like everything was closing in on him. The room was rectangular; not at all wide; there was perhaps a metre between him and the nearer two walls, but it was extremely lengthy; probably about fifteen metres long.…

I glanced out of the train window, watching the scenery speed away. Mighty oaks, bristling firs and radiant maple trees were all transformed into no more than colourful pins. The seat beside me lay vacant, as what once sat a wonderful and lovely gentleman, no longer shares with me the long trip home. I stare at the endless mass of space, overshadowing the Earth. The grey radiant clouds, together, began to form a distinctive image of his face, shaping his luminous smile almost to an exact. The subconscious image the clouds attempted to portray, vanished in a matter or seconds, as the white, thick clouds, spread its wings in what was forecasted to be a destructive path. Witnessing this brings me back to the day God wept a silent rain among the mournful souls.…

Here in this small community, seemingly blocked off from the rest of the world, lies a small slate colored house with a large white tarp sheltering the driveway. Adjacent to it, is a fairly large camping trailer that, if it's lucky, gets used for its intended purpose. The maroon deck in the foreground brings life and color to the dull, 1- story house. The front yard, in which I spent my childhood, seems everlastingly covered with the blades of the towering trees that I have grown so accustomed to. The aroma of the rainfall the night prior still lingers in the air, even as the sun begins to rise over the dewy, frost ridden lawn. Here, in the confines of my own habitat, listening to the songs of the morning birds and the blue jays, is where I connected with my surroundings. Here, is where I call home..…

Sally just shrugged as they were trudging through the muddy, rainy, and crowded streets with wet coats. Everything was obscure, the gutters were filled with dirty water. Their drenched feet and boots whined as they stepped on the cemented sidewalk.Their bodies had gave up on providing heat and presented to the atmosphere’s harsh temperatures. The small droplets upon their face chilled their skin and faintly glowed due to the foggy streetlights. The wind howled and echoed into their ears while the rain pattered down upon the ground .The water flowed down along the sidewalk flooding the drain system. The cars zoomed by so fast that the puddles splashed like a tsunami. With only the streetlights providing illumination along the street, the road…

He always kept to the western side of the village that he was familiar with, but the alley he found himself in was a complete novelty to him. Looking up at the sky, it looked like the sun would soon fade and night would emerge. He felt his stomach rumble yet, a mere moment later, his crack clenched up firmly. The two parts that were supposed to be cooperating seemed to be currently at war, leaving him helpless. Sighing yet again, he wandered on and on, until night had fully taken place. The village had calmed somewhat, with windows of the houses glistening in light gold from the lanterns burning inside. Finding a slightly hidden alley, Lino went inside and hid, crouching against the wall and tightly wrapping his arms around his knees. It’s no good……

It was a clear bright and hot sunny midday, not a cloud in sight. In the twinkling of an eye smoke was seen emanating from the window and then the bursting flames. The wind was strong and as Mackey ascended the tree, the top began to sway dangerously to the burning building. There were “ooohs” and “aaaahs” from the crowd below that were growing in numbers. Mackey was cool as a cucumber; he continued his climb until he was within reaching distance with the window. The heat was blistering hot! Mackey began reaching for his back pocket for a bottle of water. Taking a few gulps of water to quenched his thirst, he poured the remaining water over his head and face. This was to protect him from the heat and possible burns he may suffer once inside the building.…

Upon reaching my frail diminutive boy, there was vast amounts of blood every where. Snow covering the ground making it looks as though someone just slaughtered something. This colossal fury wolf like dog stood proud starring at me hovering over my son. Screaming to my son Garrett you need to run. With blood bucketing out, his reply, “He Won’t Let Me”. Again! Garrett you need to run. He looked as though he was in another world. He jumped up and began to run. This beast lunged forward trying to grab him again but thank god his chain was to short.
