John Gioia is a cool guy, who dresses very nice, and can draw just about anything. John Gioia most of all is a leader, on and off the court. John Gioia helps out, not because he has to, but because he can. John Gioia has the knowledge and the relatability to be one of the best leaders that can compete with the best.
Gioia is a young assistant coach for the East Haven High School boys tennis team.He used to play for the team himself, and was one of the captains of the team. This is where Gioia started being a leader. John Gioia has had to lead this team all on his own in numerous occasions, as the head coach just accepted a new job that makes it difficult to show up everyday. He has even helped me win the match when it was very close. …show more content…
I was playing with my doubles partner against Madison, who have a very good tennis team, and it was neck to neck. All game me and my team mate barely could hit back our opponent's serve and if we did, it would be very weak and end up getting slammed on us and John Gioia saw this. So he brings us to the side to give us a little pep talk and instructions on how we can fix our problem. He tells us that when our opponent in serving, he opens his hips to show what side of the box he is hitting on, this is very hard to notice as it is a subtle movement.
This information I would normally not take as serious, as if it was someone else like another player I cannot always trust as they do not have as much experience as Gioia and was not in that position before. After that my teammate and I looked for the hip movement in the serve and were able to hit the serve a lot faster and with more power making us able to pull out the win. “It’s important for me as an assistant coach to build strong relationships with the players on the team so that they will follow my leadership, trust my judgement and knowledge of tennis”-John Gioia. John Gioia also is also a leader after practice and matches, say you want to work on you backhand, but the next practice is in two days, he tries his hardest to get there to help you, even it is just you and not more people. Personally as a player on the team, I have played with Gioia on a day we had off, he came when he had free time to help me and few others with our serves as we may not have time to work on it during practice. “He’s always there for us when we need him, he’ll go before practice or stay after practice with us to help us work on anything we want to improve our
skills and do better in our matches.”-Captain Tony Cofrancesco of the Tennis Team. Leadership is something that does not come overnight, and needs to be earned, this would be the hardest part for him. Since Gioia is still very young for an assistant coach, that seems to be his biggest hardships when being recognised for a leader. To overcome this, he had to show that he deserves the respect, from the way he played on the court and his knowledge of the sport. The respect that he receives from people is very astounding, as coaches that saw him play as a student recognizes him as a coach and gives him the respect he deserves. Even players that graduated before him and came back for a practice just to stop by, give him the respect he deserves, as they see that he is a strong leader that helps the team. Many players see John Gioia as their future selves, they see what their skill can be like if they apply themselves, and Gioia is there to guide them. Even though he is a young coach, and leader, he can only improve as time goes by. “As a coach I lead by example, by treating everyone with respect, having a positive attitude and work ethic, and I give players the proper encouragement to do the right thing”-John Gioia .
