Characters
Analyzing the two main characters, Hazel and Augustus.

Hazel. Hazel is not a typical teenager. She thinks and acts old for her age. She is responsible with her actions and always wish she won’t hurt anyone.

Augustus. In the beginning, Augustus Waters projects a charming and confident persona. He likes using metaphors of his own. As the story unfolds, we discover the other side of Augustus: Gus. I would describe Hazel as probably being a lower class uneducated female. I would have to take a guess that she is uneducated because of the way that she talks and the fact that she is cleaning out a Howard Johnsons restroom. I also think that she may come from the south from the way she runs words together to form other words. As far as Hazel’s personality goes, there is not a whole lot of information to give me a proper idea as to what kind of person she may be. I would have to say that Hazel is rather sassy with her attitude. I think that the idea of a frog coming out of a toilet and proposing that if she kisses him she will become a princess, in all reality, is quite terrifying. And I find it quite funny of Hazel…

Hazel Motes is a young man from Flannery O’ Connor, in Wise Blood, who I considerably believe him to be naïve, because of his innocent, ignorant, and impulsive behavior as seen throughout the book. His innocence is shown through the way he talks to Mrs. Watts and Sabbath, as both of them approach him in a sexual manner, and Hazel and his innocent mind doesn’t know how to continue with their devious ways. Hazels ignorant against Jesus, that even if he existed and had him in front of him, he still would refuse to believe. “The Church Without Christ” is Hazels own church, which he preaches of on the streets, with impulsiveness and intensity amongst anyone who listens, and hears his preach on Jesus being a liar.…

Hazel and Augustus are able to build a strong relationship. The author uses characterization in order to build trust between the two characters. Since Hazel was able to put her faith in Augustus, her character became stronger and started to have more confidence in herself. Augustus, a philosophical teenager, helps Hazel live her life in the limited time that she has although he, himself was dying. Both characters became stronger and were able to live their life as much as they could because of how they made each other feel. Augustus made sure Hazel never looked down on herself.
