Utilitarianism is the doctrine that actions are right if they are useful or for the benefit of a majority. It is the doctrine that states an action is right insofar as it promotes happiness, and that the greatest happiness of the greatest amount of people should be the guiding principle of conduct. Aside from selecting the action that results in the greatest amount of happiness, utilitarians also think about the consequences each of their actions or situations would provide. Like in this case utilitarianism should be used when it comes to voting and it shouldn’t be used to decide if it’s good to end one life to save the lives of five. I understand that ending one life to save the lives of five ends with a ‘good’ result making the majority of the people happy but if those five people were the ones in critical conditions and on the verge of death it was meant for those five people to die and keep that one person alive. If God wanted that one person to die he would have made it happen but instead God wanted the five lives he was about to take until a utilitarian came along and changed his plans just because it results in making more people happy and less people in pain. I believe that one should be able to do what they believe is morally right and not be told to do things just because it makes more people happy, one has the right to say and do what they believe, they should think for themselves and not be told what they have to do and how to do it. Everyone deserves freedom, whether it’s physical freedom, mental freedom or both. Overall, I learned that utilitarianism only wants to do what makes the majority of the people happy as they consider the different possible consequences that are involved with every situation despite all their flaws, like in this case, hedonism, being too demanding, and individual
