John Proctor
Honorable...Ashamed...Respected...All of these words can be used to describe John Proctor. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible John Proctor, one of the main characters, is faced with a variety of challenges. The most extreme test that he must face is to admit to a crime that ultimately leads to his death. At one time he was looked up to in the town of Salem, however when a situation arises, John Proctor must fight his conscience. He is motivated and tested to tell the truth even though it ruined his good reputation and contributed largely to the theme of an individuals reputation throughout the play. This man truly created a model for us to follow.
In this play based on seventeenth century witchhunts, John Proctor is motivated by anger to speak out against Reverend Parris even though no one else does. Proctor dislikes and distrusts Reverend Parris. This can be seen when Proctor says, “[there is] no light of god in that man” and “I will not conceal it”(30). He is willing to admit that he does not like Parris and feels that he, “can not speak one minute without speaking of hell”(30), and therefore does not have divine backing. Proctor knows that Parris is more concerned about his own pride rather than looking out for the welfare of Salem. This is ironic because Parris was said to be a man of God and yet, he speaks of hell and his primary concern is not the church. John Proctor feels that he has too much power and therefore is compelled to protect that is power at all costs. He is so frustrated with a church and the mob mentality in the town of Salem, Proctor feels obliged to say, “I sayI sayGod is dead”(119). In a community that is known for its spiritual zeal, this shows how much of an impact the hysteria had made in the town of Salem. Proctor felt that all the people that had previously claimed’ “to be members of the church”(93), including Reverend Parris are not living up to their spiritual reputation. This bothers Proctor because he strives to be true to who he

In the 1953 play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the main protagonist, John Proctor allows the audience to create an emotion of sympathy towards him. In the play John Proctor is the husband of Elizabeth Proctor, he is a farmer, and a father of three boys. He was also accused of witchcraft like many individuals who lived in the town of Salem. Proctor did not attend church, because of Reverend Parris. Parris is the minister of Salem, who preaches about wealth, “…and for twenty week he preach nothin’ but golden candlesticks until he had them”. (Act Two, pg. 69) John had no importance for wealth, but rather of God, it was one of the reasons he stopped attending church. The other was to avoid Abigail Williams. John committed adultery with Abigail,…

He thinks since he is the reverend, he should be above the law. Earlier when he was discussing with Abigail about her actions he talks about something that he doesn’t want to happen to him but later ends up doing to someone else. “But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest, you must let me know of it now, for my enemies will and they will ruin me with it”(Miller). He doesn’t want rumors about him to go through Salem, but when the rumors are about the people he dislikes he is all for them. When Parris and Proctor are in court Parris brings up scandals dealing with Proctor. “Such a christian that will not come to church once in a month”(Miller). He is saying that Proctor is not a good christian for not going to church, but Parris lies a lot which goes against the 10 commandments making him not a good christian. Parris is a hypocrite because he has to keep himself above…

In the play The Crucible, the tragic hero John Proctor, is caught between his flaws that stop him from helping his community and that the ones that lead him to his down fall. Throughout the play, John Proctor has two choices, he can either save his life by tarnishing his name, or he can choose to die while preserving his integrity. He becomes the tragic hero by trying to help his community after a group of teenage girls start to accuse community members of witchcraft. By trying to do so, he ends up tarnishing his name after admitting to having an affair with the leader of the group, Abigail Williams. The main reason as to why he is the tragic hero is because although he was trying to do the right thing in order to save those accused of witchcraft, he refused to sacrifice his reputation, which he felt was the only thing he had left. In order to save everyone, he would have had to sign a written confession stating that he had in fact performed witchcraft, and by doing so, this would have most definitely destroyed his name in the town. He had too much pride in him to sign something that wasn’t true, and by doing so; it therefore lead to his arrest and eventually his death.…

In The play The Crucible one character whose feelings drastically change is John Proctor’s. John was accused of witchcraft and of having an affair with Abigail. When the accusations first started arising he believed none of it and was denying everything. His wife, Goody Proctor was also accused of witchcraft and he denied that as well. He really committed no witchcraft at all and neither did his wife. He however did have an affair with Abigail. John saw right through all the drama and acting and was going to stand by his wife, the truth, and what was right. Also, at the beginning of the play John would always snap at his wife and would blame her for the problems that were arising in their marriage.…

But we mustn't forget that Proctor could have been saved, were it not for Reverend Parris. This time, it was his stubbornness for John to sign a piece of paper that kept him from living the rest of his days at the very least in prison. In the last Act, Parris claimed that "the village must have proof" (1231) that he confessed to his loyalty to Lucifer. In this incident, Proctor's life is on the verge of salvation, but Parris insists that he must sign his name to prove he is innocent, even though every judge -including Elizabeth- had witnessed his confession. If he had not been so hardheaded for John to sign, maybe John would have lived. This was not the first time Reverend Parris let his stubborn features irritate and halt the good progress of clarity in Salem. When Proctor tries to defend his wife in court, Reverend Parris claims "This is a clear attack upon the court!" (1194). He is completely convinced that this band of tyranny in the court is doing nothing but goodwill for the citizens, when there are obvious signs of innocent people being killed. Throughout the entire play, Parris is hardheaded in the belief that Salem is infested with evil, and no amount of evidence can change his mind.…
