Proctor would rather hang to save his friends and tell the truth than carry on a lie and live. Since he does chose not to lie and decides to tell the truth and hang instead, he is a very noble man. To know your going to die but have enough willpower to accept that and not have to commit a sin and lie is a courageous act.
Proctor was innocent in the whole witchcraft thing, but he couldn’t allow himself to be de-named. He wouldn't sign the confession or let his naame be taken away from him or his family. Though he felt it wrong to have to lie about not being part of the witchcraft, he feels he deserves to hang for all the wrong he has done by Elizabeth.
